Auggies tie St. Scholastica 1-1

BOXSCORE

MINNEAPOLIS -- Lisa Weniger (JR, Eagan, Minn./School of Environmental Studies HS) scored early in the first half for Augsburg College, while Beth Flesvig (SR, Proctor, Minn.) scored 37 seconds into the second half for the College of St. Scholastica, as the teams played to a 1-1, two-overtime tie in a nonconference women's soccer game Wednesday evening at Augsburg's Edor Nelson FIeld.

Weniger scored her first goal of the season on a header off a corner kick by Whitney Holman (SR, New Hope, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS) in the 16th minute for Augsburg (3-4-4 overall).

Meanwhile, Flesvig scored on a downfield sprint off a pass from Ellen Litecky (SR, Duluth, Minn./East HS) 37 seconds into the second half for St. Scholastica, a team that has reached the NCAA Division III national playoffs the last two seasons while winning the last five Upper Midwest Athletic Conference regular-season titles.

"St. Scholastica is a solid team but I felt like this was a game we should have come away with," said Augsburg head coach Mike Navarre. "Whitney found Lisa's head on a great set piece, but unfortunately our inability to track players haunted us again as St. Scholastica got on the other end of a through ball that should have been cleared to begin the second half."

Augsburg controlled possession throughout the first half, outshooting the Saints by a 12-7 margin in the opening stanza, in windy conditions at Edor Nelson Field. But St. Scholastica took the momentum in the second half, with a 7-5 shots advantage. Augsburg outshot St. Scholastica by a 6-3 margin in the 20 minutes of overtime, including a 5-0 advantage in the second overtime session. Augsburg also had six corner kicks, while the Saints did not attempt a corner kick in the game.

"The wind also made it difficult to play tonight, and that hurt us a bit as it disrupted our ability to possess. Nevertheless, we saw a lot of positives from the game tonight and will continue to move forward," Navarre said.

Augsburg goalkeeper Katie Flakne (SO, Burnsville, Minn./Holy Angels HS), making her third start and fourth appearance of the season in goal, collected nine saves. St. Scholastica goalkeeper Erin Olejnicak (SO, Brainerd, Minn.) had six saves.

Augsburg forward Lacey Hoover (JR, Duluth, Minn./Central HS) led all players with seven shots, while Courtney Barthel (FY, St. Michael, Minn./St. Michael-Albertville HS) had four shots and Bri Dorale (FY, Ramsey, Minn./Anoka HS) had three shots. Flesvig and Melisa Entinger (SR, Mound, Minn./Holy Trinity HS) had three shots apiece for the Saints.

Augsburg returns to Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play on Saturday(10/10) at 7:30 p.m., hosting Concordia-Moorhead at Edor Nelson Field.

"With three losses in the conference, our backs are against the wall as we host first place and No. 14-ranked Concordia on Saturday. It will be a great test for our young team," Navarre said.
