ST. BONIFACIUS, Minn. -- With all five starters scoring in double figures, the Augsburg College men's basketball team opened its season with a 96-69 victory over Loras College at the Crown College Coaches vs. Cancer Tip-Off Tournament on Friday night.
David Olson (SR, Lindstrom, Minn./Chisago Lakes HS) led all players with 21 points, going 5-for-5 from three-point range and 7-of-9 from the field, to go along with five assists, for the Auggies (1-0 overall).
Ben Flavin (JR, Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville North HS) had 17 points and four assists, and
Andy Grzesiak-Grimm (SO, Wyoming, Minn./St. Francis HS) had 15 points and six rebounds.
Loras (1-1 overall) was led by Travis Guy and Dan Pawelski, who had 13 points apiece.
Augsburg will play in the finals of the Coaches vs. Cancer Tip-Off Tournament against Wisconsin-River Falls on Saturday (11/21) at 7:30 p.m. The Falcons topped host Crown 92-70 on Friday.
Brett Sorenson (SO, Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville South HS) had 12 points, six rebounds, three blocked shots and three steals for the Auggies, while
Jon Cassens (SR, Prior Lake, Minn.) scored 10 points with seven assists.
Cory Polta (SO, Spring Lake Park, Minn.) came off the bench with eight points and five rebounds, as 15 Auggies saw action in the game.
As a team, Augsburg had an impressive shooting night, hitting 60.3 percent (35-of-58) from the field, including 64.5 percent (20-of-31) in the second half, as the Auggies outscored the Duhawks by a 57-43 margin to close the game. Augsburg connected on nine 3-pointers, and outrebounded Loras by a 34-29 margin. The Auggies also scored 19 points off of 17 Loras turnovers.
Augsburg jumped out to a 13-2 lead in the first 4:51 of the game, behind seven points by Grzesiak-Grimm. The Auggies eventually built a 22-7 lead midway through the first half, a lead extended to 39-26 at halftime. Augsburg pulled away to lead by as many as 36 points late in the second half.
