GREATER PHOENIX INVITATIONAL STATISTICS
PHOENIX, Ariz. -- The Augsburg College baseball team completed its spring break trip to Arizona for the Greater Phoenix Invitational with a 4-6 record, with a sweep of Knox (Ill.) and splits with Concordia-Wisconsin and William Paterson (N.J.).
Seven Auggie batters hit .400 or better on the week, led by catcher
Craig Henry (JR, Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial HS), who hit .500 (14-of-28) with 13 runs scored, 13 RBI and six doubles. He collected a .714 slugging percentage and .600 on-base percentage on the week. Henry is currently on an 11-game hitting streak, and had multiple-hit games four times on the Arizona trip.
Augsburg (6-9 overall) opened the week of games in Arizona on Sunday, splitting with Concordia-Wisconsin,
falling 8-3 while
winning the nightcap 18-2. On Monday, the Auggies were swept by Wisconsin-La Crosse,
falling 11-2 and
12-6. But the Auggies got the hitting stroke going on Wednesday, sweeping
Knox 20-4 and
14-9.
On Thursday, Augsburg completed a suspended game from March 3 with Dickinson State (N.D.), but
fell 4-3 in 10 innings, as the teams resumed the game in the eighth inning. Dickinson State swept the Auggies in the regularly scheduled games on Thursday,
17-12 and
16-3. On Friday, the Auggies closed their appearance in the invitational with a split with William Paterson,
winning 8-4 and
losing 15-6.
As a team, Augsburg hit .371 on the week, including .464 efforts (13-of-28) by
Joe Pierce (JR, Eden Prairie, Minn.) and
Brent Kolbow (FY, Forest Lake, Minn.). Pierce had 10 RBI, three doubles and a home run while claiming a .679 slugging percentage. Kolbow drove in six runs while scoring 10, also collecting 10 walks and stealing five bases in six attempts. He had a team-best .615 on-base percentage for the week.
Donald Blunt (SO, Richfield, Minn.) hit .419 on the week, with 13 runs scored, three doubles, two triples, a home run and seven RBI, with a team-best .742 slugging percentage and four stolen bases.
Augsburg used six different starting pitchers and six relievers on the week, led by a complete-game, six strikeout performance by
Sam Weber (JR, Arden Hills, Minn./Mounds View HS) in the 20-4 win over Knox on Wednesday.
Jon-Eric Urseth (SR, Golden Valley, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS),
Alex Glasenapp (JR, Minneapolis, Minn./South HS) and
Alex Gustafson (SR, Anoka, Minn.) each went 1-1 on the week, while
Kristofer Ozga (SO, Hawthorn Woods, Ill./Stevenson HS) also appeared in two starts and had a team-best nine srikeouts on the week.
Augsburg opens Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play next Friday (3/27) at 4 p.m., with a doubleheader against St. Mary's at the Metrodome in Minneapolis.
