Auggies sweep Cardinals at Metrodome

MINNEAPOLIS -- Eric Olson (JR, New Prague, Minn.) went 4-for-8 in the doubleheader, including a 3-for-4 effort with three RBI and two doubles in the second game, as Augsburg College scored a sweep of St. Mary's University in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference baseball doubleheader on Friday night at the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome.

Augsburg (8-9 overall, 2-0 MIAC) claimed a 7-5 victory over St. Mary's (4-10 overall, 0-2 MIAC) in eight innings in the first game, rallying from a 4-3, sixth-inning deficit with a run in the seventh and three runs in the eighth. Augsburg built a 6-1 lead after five-and-a-half innings and held on for a 6-5 win over the Cardinals in the second contest.

Tim Gerding (FY, Robbinsdale, Minn./Cooper HS) and James Panning (SR, Gibbon, Minn./Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop HS) had two hits and scored two runs each in the first game for the Auggies, with Gerding hitting a triple and scoring in the fourth inning, while driving in a run in the eighth inning. Joe Pierce also had two hits in the game, including a run-scoring double in the first inning.

In the second contest, Olson collected a two-run double in the third inning, and drove in another run on a double in the fifth, as part of his 3-for-4 performance. Bryant Nordby (SO, Brownton, Minn./McLeod West HS), Craig Henry (JR, Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial HS) and Brent Kolbow (FY, Forest Lake, Minn.) had two hits apiece for the Auggies in the second game, with Henry claiming a double and Kolbow hitting a triple.

First-game starter Kristofer Ozga (SO, Hawthorn Woods, Ill./Stevenson HS) struck out seven while walking just one in six innings of work in the first game, with Shawn Sanders (SR, St. Charles, Minn.) claiming the win with an inning of scoreless relief in the seventh. In the second game, Jon-Eric Urseth (SR, Golden Valley, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS) struck out four while walking one in six innings of work to earn the win. Brian Olson (SR, Cottage Grove, Minn./Park HS) closed both games to earn saves for the Auggies.

For St. Mary's, Brandon Haugh (SR, Easton, Minn./United South Central HS) went 4-for-7 in the doubleheader, with a double, triple and six RBI. Zach Olberding (JR, Maplewood, Minn./Roseville HS) had three hits, including two doubles, in the doubleheader, while Kyle Ryan (JR, St. Paul, Minn./Hill-Murray HS) also had three hits.

Andrew Junker (SO, Lakeland, Minn./Stillwater HS) struck out three for the Cardinals in six innings of work in the first game, while Andy Pass (SR, Roseville, Minn.) had six strikeouts against just one walk in starting the second game.

Augsburg returns to action on Sunday (3/29) at 9 p.m., hosting Finlandia (Mich.) at the Metrodome in a nonconference doubleheader. St. Mary's hosts Gustavus in MIAC play on Wednesday (4/1) at 2:30 p.m. in Winona.
