MINNEAPOLIS (3/3/09) -- James Panning (SR, Gibbon, Minn./Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop HS) went 3-for-5 at the plate with a triple, two RBI and two runs scored in the doubleheader, as Augsburg College competed in a nonconference baseball doubleheader with Dickinson State University (N.D.) on Tuesday morning at the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome.
Augsburg (1-1 overall) dropped the first game to Dickinson State (4-2 overall) 10-4. The second game was halted after seven innings with the score tied 3-3, due to time constraints at the Metrodome. The teams are scheduled to complete the game when they face each other again at the Greater Phoenix Invitational on March 19 in Chandler, Ariz.
Joe Pierce (JR, Eden Prairie, Minn.) also went 3-for-5 at the plate for the Auggies in the doubleheader, driving in two runs. Donald Blunt (SO, Richfield, Minn.) had a triple among his two hits, driving in two runs while scoring two and collecting two stolen bases.
Trailing 3-2 in the top of the seventh inning of the second game, the Auggies tied the game after Blunt reached base on a fielder's choice, stole second and advanced to third on a groundout, and scored on a two-out, infield single by Pierce. Blunt also scored on a single by Pierce in the first inning for the Auggies, and Blunt drove in Panning on an infield single in the fifth.
Back-to-back doubles by Nolan Bracken and Mike Nash plated a run for the Blue Hawks in the first inning, and they scored two runs on an error from a dropped fly ball in the bottom of the fifth inning.
Alex Glasenapp (JR, Minneapolis, Minn./South HS) started and struck out two in five innings of work in the second game, with Shawn Sanders (SR, St. Charles, Minn.) and Brian Olson (SR, Cottage Grove, Minn./Park HS) pitching in relief.
In the first game, Augsburg used a four-run second inning, keyed by a two-run triple by Panning, to take a 4-2 lead, but the Blue Hawks forged ahead in the late innings. Tony Isbell hit a two-run homer in the fifth inning, Chance Holland hit a two-run sigle in the sixth inning, and a two-run double by Chris Young was the key hit in a four-run seventh frame.
Sam Weber (JR, Arden Hills, Minn./Mounds View HS) started for Augsburg and struck out two in 5.1 innings of work, with Alex Gustafson (SR, Anoka, Minn.) and Marshall Nelson (SO, Albertville, Minn./West Lutheran HS) pitching in relief.
Augsburg returns to action on Friday (3/6) at 6 a.m., with a doubleheader against Mayville State (N.D.) at the Metrodome.
