MINNEAPOLIS (3/6/09) -- Kristofer Ozga (SO, Hawthorn Woods, Ill./Stevenson HS) pitched a complete-game shutout, striking out seven while allowing just two hits, as Augsburg College scored a 3-0 victory over Mayville State University (N.D.) in the first game of a nonconference baseball doubleheader on Friday morning at the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome.
Despite a strong pitching performance by starter Jon-Eric Urseth (SR, Golden Valley, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS), Augsburg (2-2 overall) dropped the second game 4-3, as the Comets (1-3 overall) rallied with two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning.
Ozga pitched a complete-game for the victory in the first game, as Augsburg manufactured their runs on just four hits. Craig Henry (JR, Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial HS) had a triple, while Mason Holmquist (SO, Prior Lake, Minn.) and Eric Olson (JR, New Prague, Minn.) had run-scoring singles. An Olson single in the second inning scored Joe Pierce (JR, Eden Prairie, Minn.), while a Holmquist single in the sixth drove in Olson.
In the second game, Augsburg rallied with two runs in the top of the seventh inning to take a 3-2 lead, but the Comets scored twice in the bottom of the frame to score the win -- with the winning run coming across on a bases-loaded walk.
Urseth pitched six innings, striking out three while allowing just two hits and one earned run. James Panning (SR, Gibbon, Minn./Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop HS) went 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI, while Brent Kolbow (FY, Forest Lake, Minn.) had a base hit and two stolen bases.
Augsburg is idle until March 15, when it faces Concordia-Wisconsin at the Greater Phoenix Invitational in Scottsdale, Ariz.
