ST. PAUL, Minn. -- Joe Pierce (JR, Eden Prairie, Minn.) had three hits, including a double, in the doubleheader, while James Panning (SR, Gibbon, Minn./Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop HS) had two doubles, as the Augsburg College baseball team dropped a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference twinbill at Macalester College on Tuesday afternoon at Nicholson Field.
Macalester (12-12 overall, 4-4 MIAC) claimed an 8-7 win in the opener on a suicide squeeze bunt RBI single in the bottom of the seventh inning, then scored a 3-1 win over Augsburg (11-12 overall, 3-3 MIAC) in the nightcap.
In the opener, Augsburg rallied from a 4-2, third-inning deficit with a four-run fourth frame, with a two-run double by Brent Kolbow (FY, Forest Lake, Minn.) giving the Auggies a 6-4 advantage. The Scots rallied with single runs in each of their next three innings to take a 7-6 lead into the seventh.
Augsburg tied the game in the top of the seventh, as Pierce drove in Kolbow on a two-out infield single. But Macalester won the game in the bottom of the frame, as Nathan Rubin walked, moved up two bases on two wild pitches, and scored on a squeeze bunt by Will Chen.
Kristofer Ozga (SO, Hawthorn Woods, Ill./Stevenson HS) struck out five in four innings of work for the Auggies in the first game.
In the second game, Macalester scored single runs in each of the first three innings off of starter Jon-Eric Urseth (SR, Golden Valley, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS), who struck out four while walking two in a complete-game effort.
Augsburg scored its lone run in the fourth inning, as an RBI double by Panning drove home Mason Holmquist (SO, Prior Lake, Minn.).
Augsburg returns to MIAC play on Wednesday (4/8) at 2:30 p.m., with a rescheduled doubleheader against Hamline at Parade Stadium.
