Joe Pierce (JR, Eden Prairie, Minn.) had six hits, including three doubles, in eight at-bats, driving in six runs while scoring five, to lead Augsburg College in a doubleheader sweep of visiting Hamline University in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference baseball action on Wednesday afternoon at Parade Stadium.
Craig Henry (JR, Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial HS) also had three doubles for Augsburg (13-12 overall, 5-3 MIAC), going 5-for-7 in the doubleheader with two RBI and five runs scored, as Augsburg claimed wins of 14-2 and 8-5.
Jason Kickhafer (SR, Cottage Grove, Minn./Park HS) struck out three while walking two in six innings of work in the first game for the Auggies, while
Alex Glasenapp (JR, Minneapolis, Minn./South HS) struck out five in four innings starting the second game.
Mark Heise (JR, Foley, Minn.) pitched in both games of the doubleheader, earning the save in the second game with three innings of scoreless relief.
Hamline (12-13 overall, 4-4 MIAC) was limited to 13 hits in the doubleheader, including doubles by Lincoln Hughes and Andy Powell. Hughes, Andy King, Bill Sand and Dan Kaczrowski had two hits each for the Pipers in the doubleheader.
Big innings keyed the Auggies to both victories. In the first game, Augsburg built upon a 5-1 lead with an eight-run fourth inning, sending 13 batters to the plate. In the second game, Augsburg rallied from a 5-2, fourth inning deficit with five runs in the bottom of the fourth inning, sending eight batters to the plate.
Henry and Pierce both had three hits for the Auggies in the first game, with Pierce driving in four runs and scoring three, and Henry driving in two runs while scoring three and contributing two doubles.
James Panning (SR, Gibbon, Minn./Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop HS),
Donald Blunt (SO, Richfield, Minn.) and
Tim Gerding (FY, Robbinsdale, Minn./Cooper HS) had two hits each for the Auggies in the first game.
In the second game, Pierce had two doubles in going 3-for-3 with two RBI and two runs scored, while
Bobby Monsour (FY, Inver Grove Heights, Minn./Roseville HS) went 3-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI. Henry and
Eric Olson (JR, New Prague, Minn.) had two hits each, with Olson driving in two runs.
Augsburg returns to MIAC play on Saturday (4/11) at 1 p.m., hosting St. Olaf at Parade Stadium. Hamline is idle until next Wednesday (4/15), when it hosts Concordia-Moorhead at 2:30 p.m.
