Blazers top Auggies 2-0

BOXSCORE

ST. JOSEPH, Minn. -- Scoring twice in a 6:03 span midway through the second half, the College of St. Benedict scored a 2-0 victory over visiting Augsburg College in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference women's soccer game on Tuesday afternoon.

Both teams had 11 shots in the contest, and Augsburg head coach Mike Navarre noted that the Auggies had opportunities to score, but could not convert.

"This was a tough loss. We had plenty of chances to go up but were either denied by the crossbar or poor execution in the penalty area," Navarre said. "It's tough to admit, but we are young and need to understand what it takes to dig out these close games."

St. Benedict (3-1-1 overall, 1-0-0 MIAC) scored in the 59th minute on an unassisted goal by Alison Tourville, and Tourville assisted on the Blazers' second goal, sending a corner kick for a header by Heather Beshears into the goal, just six minutes later.

"St. Ben's had two great finishes, capitalizing on a turnover in the back and scoring off a corner kick. Give them credit, they found a way to win and we found a long bus ride home," Navarre said.

Augsburg (1-2-2 overall, 0-1-0 MIAC) goalkeeper Diana Bocklund (FY, Mahtomedi, Minn.) had five saves in the game. Courtney Barthel (FY, St. Michael, Minn./St. Michael-Albertville HS) had three shots in the game to lead the Auggies, while Whitney Holman (SR, New Hope, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS) and Laurie Barger (FY, Monticello, Minn.) had two shots each.

Augsburg returns to MIAC play with a game on Saturday (9/19) at 1 p.m. at St. Thomas.

"Now we play last year's conference champs and one of the best teams in the region in St. Thomas. It's a great opportunity and challenge for us," Navarre said.
