Grzesiak-Grimm posts double-double as Auggies fall to Tommies

BOXSCORE

ST. PAUL, Minn. -- Andy Grzesiak-Grimm (SO, Wyoming, Minn./St. Francis HS) posted his second double-double of the season, with 16 points and 11 rebounds but Augsburg couldn't catch the conference-leading Tommies as they fell 77-66 in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action at Concordia-St. Paul's Gangelhoff Center.

Despite outshooting (54.5 percent to 54.0 percent) and outrebounding (28-22) the Tommies, Augsburg was not able to cut the second half deficit to less than seven. St. Thomas finished the game a perfect 6-for-6 from the free throw line in the final 55 seconds as they held off the Auggies and extended their home win streak to 53 games -- dating back to Jan. 2, 2006 when they lost to Augsburg.

Augsburg (12-5 overall, 7-5 MIAC) was led by Grzesiak-Grimm's 16-point performance on 6-for-7 shooting from the floor, and his 11 rebounds were a game-high. Matthew Quammen (JR, Victoria, Minn./Holy Family HS) and Jon Cassens (SR, Prior Lake, Minn.) also scored in double figures for the Auggies, finishing with 13 and 11 points respectively.

St. Thomas (16-2 overall, 12-1 MIAC) was led by Joe Scott and Alex Healy. Scott tied a season-high 21 points, while Healy finished with 16 points, seven rebounds and five assists for the Tommies.

St. Thomas came out with a 11-2 run to start the game but Augsburg countered with a 10-4 run of their own to pull within three at 15-12 with just under 10 minutes left in the first half. A Grzesiak-Grimm dunk at the 5:14 mark pulled Augsburg within two at 23-21. St. Thomas was able to hit a three-pointer with 10 seconds left in the first half to take at 34-26 lead into the locker room at the intermission.

In the second half, Augbsurg was able to cut the St. Thomas lead to seven on numerous occasions but couldn't seem to get any closer as the Tommies held off the Auggies at the free throw line, finishing 13-for-15 in the second half.

For the game, Augsburg shot 54.5 percent (24-of-44) from the floor while the Tommies connected on 54.0 percent (27-of-50) of their shots. Augsburg claimed a 28-22 advantage on the boards but committed 14 turnovers, while only forcing nine. The difference in the game came down to long range shooting, where the Tommies hit 9-of-19, while Augsburg was only able to hit 4-of-14.

Augsburg and St. Thomas both return to action on Saturday (1/30), with the Auggies hosting St. Olaf College and the Tommies hosting Macalester College.
