Mario Mjelleli (JR, Faribault, Minn./Shattuck-St. Mary's HS) scored the game-winning goal 68 seconds into overtime, as Augsburg College scored a 5-4 victory over No. 8-ranked Hamline University in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference men's hockey game on Friday evening at the Augsburg Ice Arena.
Augsburg (11-6-1 overall, 4-4-1 MIAC) scored the first four goals of the game, but Hamline (11-4-3 overall, 6-2-1 MIAC) rallied to tie the game with four straight goals, including the game-tying goal on a power-play, extra-attacker goal with seven seconds left in regulation time.
Nick Guran (SO, McHenry, Ill./McHenry East HS) had a goal and two assists for the Auggies, while
Chris Johnson (SR, Verona, Wis./Madison Memorial HS) and
Joel Sauer (JR, Madison, Wis./Memorial HS) record a goal and assist each.
Augsburg scored three goals in a 2:25 span early in the first period, as
Nikki Holt (JR, Hermantown, Minn.) scored at the 7:17 mark, and Sauer and Guran followed with power-play goals at the 7:44 and 9:32 marks, respectively. Johnson gave the Auggies a 4-0 lead at the 5:18 mark of the second period, scoring a shorthanded goal while Augsburg was killing off a five-minute Hamline power play.
The Pipers, ranked No. 8 in the latest
U.S. College Hockey Online (www.uscho.com) Division III national poll, rallied to tie the game. Ryan Kupperman (JR, Canterbury, N.H.), Brian Arrigoni (SO, St. Paul, Minn./Hill-Murray HS) and Spencer Anderson (JR, Chicago, Ill.) scored to trim the lead to 4-3, and Kelly Plude (JR, Elk River, Minn.) scored the game-tying goal on the power play, after the Pipers pulled their goalie for an additional skater.
Mjelleli scored the game-winner for the Auggies, his third goal of the season, at the 1:08 mark of overtime, with Guran assisting.
Augsburg outshot Hamline by a 26-22 margin, including a 22-12 advantage through the first two periods.
Justin Lochner (FY, Sauk Rapids, Minn./Sauk Rapids-Rice HS) had 18 saves for the Auggies, while Beau Christian (SO, Moorhead, Minn.) had 21 saves for the Pipers.
The teams complete the MIAC series on Saturday (1/30) at 7:15 p.m. at the Drake Ice Arena in St. Paul.
