Ben Flavin (JR, Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville North HS) led Augsburg tying a season-high 18 points and tying a career-high seven assists as Augsburg beat St. Olaf College 72-65 in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action on Saturday afternoon at Augsburg's Si Melby Hall.
Augsburg (13-5 overall, 8-5 MIAC) was led by Flavin's 18-point performance to which he added three rebounds and two steals. Also finishing in double figures for Augsburg was
Jon Cassens (SR, Prior Lake, Minn.) and
David Olson (SR, Lindstrom, Minn./Chisago Lakes HS), who finished with 12 and 10 points respectively.
St. Olaf (8-10 overall, 6-7 MIAC) was led by Stu Neville, who finished the night with 20 points, eight rebounds and seven assists.
Despite shooting 48.0 percent in the first half, Augsburg went into the locker room down 37-32 at the intermission. Augsburg capitalized on a key 13-0 run in the second half, using a pair of three-pointers by
Matthew Quammen (JR, Victoria, Minn./Holy Family HS), two nice baskets by
Anthony Humphrey (JR, Minneapolis, Minn./DeLaSalle HS) and a three by
Zachary Eastman (JR, Chaska, Minn.) to give the Auggies their largest lead of the afternoon at 62-53.
St. Olaf cut the Augsburg lead to 66-63 with 39 seconds to play. Forced to foul, St. Olaf put Augsburg on the free throw line six times in the 34 seconds, where Flavin,
Brett Sorenson (SO, Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville South HS) and Cassens closed out the game a perfect 6-for-6 to seal the win for Augsburg.
For the game Augsburg shot 55.3 percent (26-of-47), while St. Olaf hit 42.6 percent (26-of-61) of its shots. Augsburg claimed a 35-25 advantage on the boards and the Auggie reserves outscored the Ole reserves 22-5.
Augsburg and St. Olaf both return to action on Monday (2/1) with Augsburg traveling to Gustavus and St. Olaf hosting Carleton. As the teams enter February, Augsburg sits in a tie with St. John's for third in the MIAC with an 8-5 conference record, while the Oles sit in seventh with a 6-7 MIAC mark.
