ST. PAUL, Minn. -- Augsburg College kept things close with the No. 4-ranked team in NCAA Division III football in the first half, but the University of St. Thomas pulled away in the second half en route to a 55-17 victory in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference contest on Saturday afternoon at O'Shaughnessy Stadium.
Augsburg (3-3 overall, 1-3 MIAC) trimmed the lead to 14-10 in the final minute of the first half, but St. Thomas (6-0 overall, 4-0 MIAC) scored touchdowns on all six of its drives in the second half to claim the victory. The Tommies are currently ranked No. 4 in the latest D3football.com Division III national poll and No. 5 in the American Football Coaches Association Division III national poll.
Muneer Al-Hameed (SR, Woodbury, Minn./Minneapolis Washburn HS) reached a career milestone for Augsburg, becoming the third Auggie receiver to eclipse the 3,000-yard career receiving barrier. With 10 catches for 97 yards, Al-Hameed now has 3,018 career receiving yards on 251 receptions. He now stands in second place in school history in career receptions, just 34 behind school record-holder Scott Hvistendahl (1995-98). His yardage total is third-best in school history, behind second-place Royce Winford (2005-08, 247 receptions for 3,282 yards) and first-place Hvistendahl (4,696 yards).
Quarterback
Marcus Brumm (JR, Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville South HS) completed 19-of-35 passes for 250 yards and two touchdowns for the Auggies, with
Hakeem Bourne-McFarlane (FY, Bloomington, Minn./Kennedy HS) catching three passes for 101 yards, including a 70-yard touchdown reception from Brumm in the fourth quarter.
Adam Carl (FY, Eagan, Minn.) caught his first career touchdown pass with a one-yard strike from Brumm in the first quarter.
Jack Christopherson (SR, Maple Grove, Minn./Osseo HS), Augsburg's all-time leader in career kicking points with 152, connected on a 25-yard field goal just before halftime.
St. Thomas outgained Augsburg by a 562-312 margin in the game, with the Tommies rushing for 330 yards and passing for 232 yards. Seven different Tommies scored touchdowns (five rushing, two receiving), with Colin Tobin scoring twice and producing eight carries for 114 rushing yards. Ben Wartman rushed 21 times for 118 yards and a touchdown. Quarterback Dakota Tracy threw for 185 yards on 15-of-24 passing with two touchdowns, and Fritz Waldvogel caught 10 passes for 150 yards.
Defensively, Augsburg's
Adam Mead (SR, St. Francis, Minn.) led all players with nine tackles (eight solo), while
Adam Sonntag (SO, Green Lake HS) had seven tackles (five solo).
Bryce Vee (SO, Coon Rapids, Minn./Blaine HS) and
Edmond Smith (SO, Minneapolis, Minn./North HS) had six tackles each.
For St. Thomas, Tommy Becker had seven tackles (one solo), while Willy Baregi had six tackles (three solo).
Augsburg returns to MIAC play next Saturday (9/16), hosting Concordia-Moorhead at 1 p.m. at Edor Nelson Field.
