Andy Grzesiak-Grimm (SO, Wyoming, Minn./St. Francis HS) led Augsburg with his third double double of the season as the Auggies posted a convincing 78-63 win over St. John's University on Wednesday night in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action at Augsburg's Si Melby Hall.
Grzesiak-Grimm posted 13 points and 13 rebounds to lead the Auggies, who move to 16-6 overall (11-6 MIAC) and clinch their second consecutive MIAC post-season playoff berth. Also scoring in double figures for Augsburg was the guard duo of
David Olson (SR, Lindstrom, Minn./Chisago Lakes HS) and
Jon Cassens (SR, Prior Lake, Minn.). Olson finished with 18 points and a game and season-high six assists, while Cassens posted 16 points and five assists.
St. John's (13-9 overall, 10-7 MIAC) was led by Todd Herman, who finished with a game-high 22 points, adding two rebounds and a pair of blocked shots.
Augsburg and St. John's battled basket for basket during the opening 14 minutes of action. Augsburg was leading 26-25 with 5:37 remaining in the half when the Auggies were able to put together a 13-0 run and take and extend their lead to 39-25. The Johnnies countered with a 6-0 run of their own to end the half with Augsburg leading 39-31.
In the second half, St. John's cut the Augsburg lead to 45-44 at the 12:17 mark. The Auggies put together an 11-2 run over the next three minutes to extended their lead back to double digits. Augsburg's Grzesiak-Grimm provided a big spark for the Auggies, recording three offensive rebounds and his first career three-pointer as the shot clock was expiring to allow Augsburg to take its largest lead of the night at 74-54. Augsburg cruised over the final three minutes as it claimed a 78-63 win over the Johnnies in a key MIAC matchup.
For the game, Augsburg shot 45.0 percent (27-of-60), while St. John's hit 51.1 percent (23-of-45) from the floor. Both teams finished with an identical 29 rebounds but Augsburg was able to force 18 Johnnie turnovers, while only committing nine. Augsburg was able to outscore St. John's 27-6 in points off turnovers which proved to be the big difference in the game.
Augsburg and St. John's both return to action on Saturday (2/13) with Augsburg traveling to Carleton and St. John's hosting St. Thomas.
