JUSTIN LOCHNER TALKS ABOUT THE GAME (KEYC-MANKATO)

LISTEN TO HEAD COACH CHRIS BROWN TALK ABOUT THE WEEKEND ON KSTP-AM 1500 WITH PATRICK REUSSE AND JOE SOUCHERAY ON MONDAY (3/1) AT 3:05 P.M.

ST. PETER, Minn. -- Augsburg College goalie Justin Lochner (FY, Sauk Rapids, Minn./Sauk Rapids-Rice HS) set an NCAA record with 98 saves, and the Auggies and Gustavus Adolphus College played the longest game in NCAA Division III men's hockey history, as the Gusties scored a 6-5 win in four overtimes in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference playoff semifinal game that spilled over from Saturday evening to Sunday morning at Gustavus' Don Roberts Ice Rink.

Lochner faced 104 shots and collected 98 saves, setting an NCAA men's hockey record for saves in a single game. The previous record was 95, set by Northland (Wis.) goalie Daniel McIntosh in a game against Adrian (Mich.) on Jan. 23, 2009.

The four-overtime game, with 138:38 of game action, is the longest-ever in the history of NCAA Division III men's hockey, breaking the old record of 98:42 and two overtimes in a 2-1 Minnesota-Crookston win over the Milwaukee School of Engineering (Wis.) on Feb. 23, 2002.

Saturday's contest is the second-longest in the history of NCAA college hockey -- falling just 2:57 shy of the overall record for the longest game, a 141:35, five-overtime 3-2 victory by Division I Yale over Union (N.Y.) on March 4, 2006.

Saturday's game began at 7:05 p.m. and ended at 12:35 a.m. on Sunday morning -- 5 hours and 30 minutes.

Combined with Friday's two-overtime, 3-2 win in Augsburg's playoff-opener against St. Olaf, the Auggies played a total of 228:18 -- the equivalent of nearly four complete 60-minute regulation games -- in a span covering 28-and-a-half hours.

Lochner had 39 saves in Friday's victory, giving him 137 in the two conference playoff games.

Eric Bigham scored the game-winning goal for the Gusties at the 18:38 mark of the fourth overtime, a wrap-around goal that slipped between Lochner's pads. The goal capped a Gustie comeback from a 5-3, second-period deficit, sending the Gusties (19-5-2 overall) to Wednesday's MIAC championship game, where they will host St. Thomas, which also won in overtime Saturday -- a 5-4, single-OT win over Hamline.

Augsburg ended its season at 16-10-1. Augsburg was in its third MIAC playoff tournament in the last four seasons under head coach Chris Brown, and its second straight playoff appearance. Augsburg's 16 wins this season are its most since the 2002-03 campaign (17-9-0).

John Lennartson (SO, Burnsville, Minn.) scored twice for the Auggies, with Nikki Holt (JR, Hermantown, Minn.), Chris Johnson (SR, Verona, Wis./Madison Memorial HS) and #J.P. Perpich# (SO, Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson HS) adding the other Auggie goals. Holt and Perpich each added assists for a two-point effort, and Trevor Doden (SO, Red Wing, Minn.) had two assists.

Augsburg trailed 2-1 after the first period, but rallied back with four goals in the second period to take a 5-3 lead. The Gusties trimmed the lead to 5-4 with a goal from James Leathers at the 18:43 mark of the second period, and tied the game on David Martinson's goal at the 16:04 mark of the third period.

Josh Swartout had 52 saves for Gustavus, which outshot the Auggies by a 104-57 margin -- including a 60-25 margin in the four overtime periods.
