Auggies fall 12-2 to UWW

MINNEAPOLIS -- A six-run fifth-inning outburst by the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater propelled the Warhawks to a 12-2 win over Augsburg College in a nonconference baseball game late Wednesday evening at the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome.

Joe Pierce (SR, Eden Prairie, Minn.) went 2-for-3 at the plate with a run scored, and Jeff Butler (FY, Prior Lake, Minn.) went 2-for-4 at the plate for Augsburg (1-4 overall) in the nine-inning game.

Jeff Donovan (JR, Wauwautosa, Wis./East HS) went 3-for-4 at the plate with two runs scored and two RBI, including a solo home run to right field in the eighth inning, for No. 15-ranked Wisconsin-Whitewater (1-0 overall).

The Warhawks pounded out 15 hits against six Augsburg pitchers in the game. Meanwhile, Riley Tincher (SR, Oregon, Wis.) struck out four in five innings of work to pick up the win for UW-Whitewater, with Kyle Lee (SO, Beaver Dam, Wis.) striking out three in four innings of work for the save.

UW-Whitewater batted around in the fifth inning, collecting eight hits and scoring six runs, including a run on a double-steal, to take a 10-1 lead.

Augsburg scored a run in the second inning, as Mason Holmquist (JR, Prior Lake, Minn.) walked and scored on a fielder's choice by Donald Blunt (JR, Richfield, Minn.). Another run came across in the eighth for the Auggies, as Pierce singled and scored on a single by Holmquist.

Augsburg travels to Phoenix, Ariz., for five doubleheaders next week in the Greater Phoenix Invitational. UW-Whitewater returns to action on Thursday (3/11) at 2 p.m., facing Hamline at the Metrodome.
