Joe Pierce (SR, Eden Prairie, Minn.) had a double and triple, driving in three of Augsburg College's six runs on the day, but Simpson College (Iowa) got the best of the Auggie baseball team in a doubleheader on Monday at Gene Autry Park in the Greater Phoenix Invitational. Simpson (3-3) scored wins of 5-4 and 11-2 over Augsburg (3-6).
Marshall Nelson (JR, Albertville, Minn./West Lutheran HS) struck out six in four innings of work in the opener for the Auggies, but surrendered all five runs in a losing effort. Pierce had a triple and drove in a run, while
Craig Henry (SR, Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial HS) went 2-for-3 at the plate.
In the second game, Simpson pounded out 15 hits -- including three doubles, a triple and a home run -- off of three Augsburg pitchers. Dave Johnson went 3-for-5 with a double, triple and home run in the game for the Storm, driving in four runs.
Pierce hit a two-run double in the third inning to account for Augsburg's scoring in the second game.
Eric Olson (SR, New Prague, Minn.) went 2-for-4 for the Auggies in the game.
Augsburg is idle on Tuesday, but returns to action on Wednesday (3/17) at 10 a.m. with a doubleheader against Mayville State (N.D.).
