Jeff Butler (FY, Prior Lake, Minn.) went 5-for-7 at the plate with three runs scored, and
Joe Pierce (SR, Eden Prairie, Minn.) went 4-for-6 at the plate with a double and two runs scored, as the Augsburg College baseball team gained a split with the State University of New York-Brockport in a Greater Phoenix Invitational doubleheader on Thursday at Gene Autry Park.
Augsburg (5-8 overall) lost the first game to Brockport State (5-6 overall) 7-4, then won the second game 5-3. Augsburg is 4-4 in its eight games so far in Arizona, with one doubleheader remaining.
In the second game,
Adam Seaman (SO, Richfield, Minn.) hit a two-run home run in the third inning, and run-scoring doubles by Pierce and
Eric Olson * (SR, New Prague, Minn.) gave the Auggies the win. Augsburg also scored an unearned run on an error in the second frame. Butler and Pierce both had two hits in the game, with Pierce scoring twice.
Alex Glasenapp (SR, Minneapolis, Minn./South HS) struck out two while allowing three runs over five innings of work to score the win, with
Mark Heise (JR, Foley, Minn.) pitching an inning of scoreless relief and
Bryant Nordby (JR, Brownton, Minn./McLeod West HS) pitching a scoreless seventh inning to earn the save.
In the first game, a five-run fifth inning spelled doom for the Auggies, as Brockport State sent nine batters to the plate and took advantage of four hits and two errors.
John Demgen (JR, Minneapolis, Minn./South HS) accounted for all of Augsburg's scoring, with a two-run single in the third inning and a two-run single in the seventh inning. Butler went 3-for-3 at the plate with two runs scored.
Augsburg finishes its trip to Arizona on Friday (3/19) at 12 p.m., with a doubleheader against Keene State (N.H.).
