Pierce's streak now at 26

GAME 1 BOX | GAME 2 BOX

WINONA, Minn. -- Joe Pierce (SR, Eden Prairie, Minn.) extended his NCAA Division III-leading active consecutive-game hitting streak to 26 straight games on Saturday, as he claimed hits in both ends of Augsburg College's Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference baseball doubleheader split with host St. Mary's University at Max Molock Field.

Pierce went 2-for-3 with an RBI double in Augsburg's (13-15 overall, 6-4 MIAC) 16-3 win over St. Mary's (10-19 overall, 3-7 MIAC), while going 1-for-4 with a two-run single in the Auggies' 9-8 loss in the second game.

Adam Seaman (FY, Richfield, Minn.) hit two home runs, driving in four runs and scoring three runs, in the first game, as the Auggies pounded out 13 hits, including six extra-base hits. Tom Petersen (SO, Hugo, Minn./White Bear Lake HS) also had a home run in the first game.

Craig Henry (SR, Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial HS) went 5-for-9 in the doubleheader, with a double in the first game and two doubles in the second game. Tim Gerding (SO, Robbinsdale, Minn./Cooper HS) had a two-run homer for the Auggies in the second game.

Pierce has now hit safely in 27 of Augsburg's 28 games this season, and his 26-game hitting streak now stands as the longest active streak in NCAA Division III baseball. Pierce's streak is currently tied for the second-longest streak that has taken place at any time this season in Division III baseball, behind a 27-game streak by Adam Komorowski of Sewanee (Tenn.) and tied with a 26-game streak by Mike Galeotiafiore of The College of New Jersey.

Augsburg's cleanup hitter, Pierce currently leads the team in all three hitting percentages -- an MIAC-leading .467 batting average, .663 slugging percentage and .510 on-base percentage -- while also leading the team in hits (43), extra-base hits (11) and RBI (32). He has struck out just three times in 104 plate appearances this season. At first base, Pierce also leads Augsburg's regulars in fielding percentage at .995 (one error in 186 defensive chances).

Leading 5-3 after four innings, the Auggies blew open the first game with 11 runs in the next two frames -- a seven-run fifth inning where the Auggies sent 11 batters to the plate, and a four-run sixth inning. Seaman hit a two-run homer in the third inning and a solo homer in the sixth inning, giving him a team-best five home runs this season.

Kristofer Ozga (JR, Hawthorn Woods, Ill./Stevenson HS) pitched six effective innings to pick up the wins, allowing just five hits and four walks while striking out one. Jarron Farah (SO, Minneapolis, Minn./St. Anthony Village HS) pitched a scoreless seventh inning, striking out one.

Augsburg took a 5-1 lead in the second inning of the second game, but the Cardinals scored four runs in the bottom of the second and four more runs in the bottom of the sixth to score the win.

After a run scored on a balk in the first inning, back-to-back, two-run doubles by Henry and Pierce plated the Auggie runs in the second inning. Gerding's two-run homer to left in the fifth inning, and a run-scoring sacrifice fly by Seaman in the sixth inning accounted for the other Auggie runs.

Andrew Warren went 4-for-7 for St. Mary's in the doubleheader, while Zach Olberding and Curt Swanson had three hits each, with Swanson driving in three runs. Ryan Archambault had four RBI in the doubleheader, including a three-run homer in the second game.

Augsburg returns to MIAC action on Wednesday (4/21) at 2:30 p.m., hosting defending Division III national champion St. Thomas at Parade Stadium.
