Auggies, UWL complete suspended game

GAME BOX
MARCH 28 GAME STORY

MINNEAPOLIS -- Augsburg College and the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse completed a suspended game from March 28 at the Metrodome on Friday afternoon at the University of Minnesota's Seibert Field, with the Eagles finishing a 10-6 win over the Auggies.

Wisconsin-La Crosse (11-14 overall) led Augsburg (14-17 overall) 9-6 in the second game of a doubleheader on March 28 at the Metrodome after six innings, when the game was halted due to time constraints. Under NCAA rules, the game needed to be completed in order to count as official for both team's records and statistics.

The teams played the seventh inning on Friday afternoon at Seibert Field, with the Eagles adding a run in the top of the frame to claim the 10-6 win. A double down the left-field line by Zach Harazin drove home Matt Trocke against Augsburg reliever Landon Olson (FY, Alexandria, Minn./Duluth Marshall HS).

Donald Blunt (JR, Richfield, Minn.) led off the bottom of the seventh with a single for the Auggies off of Wisconsin-La Crosse reliever Steve Henes, but after a lineout, the game ended on a double-play grounder.

One bright spot from the resumed game was the extension of the longest consecutive-game hitting streak in NCAA Division III baseball this season for Augsburg's Joe Pierce (SR, Eden Prairie, Minn.). By virtue of going 2-for-4 with an RBI in the game on March 28, Pierce extended his hitting streak to 29 straight games, the longest active and overall streak of any hitter in NCAA Division III baseball this season.

Pierce has now hit safely in 30 of Augsburg's 31 games this season. In addition to Pierce's streak, there have been eight other 20-plus-game hitting streaks this season in Division III baseball -- an active 27-game streak by Kyle Standridge of Rockford (Ill.), a 27-game streak by Adam Komorowski of Sewanne (Tenn.), a 26-game streak by Mike Galeotiafiore of The College of New Jersey, a 25-game streak by Greg Ferrell of Mount Union (Ohio), an active 23-game streak by Sean Claugherty of St. Scholastica (Minn.), a 23-game streak by Nolan Fadness of Wisconsin-Oshkosh, a 22-game streak by Josh Frederick of Mary Hardin-Baylor (Texas), and a 20-game streak by Eric McCloud of Olivet (Mich.).

Augsburg returns to Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play with a doubleheader at St. John's on Saturday (4/24) at 1 p.m., while Wisconsin-La Crosse has a doubleheader at Wisconsin-Superior on Saturday at 12 p.m.
