Joe Pierce (SR, Eden Prairie, Minn.) extended his consecutive-game hitting streak to 18 straight games, going 4-for-8 with a double, home run and five RBI on Saturday afternoon, lifting Augsburg College to a doubleheader sweep of host Macalester College in Minnesota Intercollegate Athletic Conference baseball action on Saturday afternoon at Nicholson Field.
Augsburg (9-11 overall, 2-0 MIAC) claimed wins over Macalester (12-7-1 overall, 0-2 MIAC) by scores of 3-2 and 8-6.
Pierce went 2-for-4 with a two-run double in the first game, and went 2-for-4 with a home run and three RBI in the second game, extending his streak to 18 straight games. He has at least one hit in 19 of Augsburg's 20 games this season, including 10 multiple-hit games. Pierce leads the team in all three hitting percentage categories -- batting average (.441), slugging percentage (.662) and on-base percentage (.466), with team highs in hits (30), extra-base hits (9) and RBI (22).
Kristofer Ozga (JR, Hawthorn Woods, Ill./Stevenson HS) and
Alex Glasenapp (SR, Minneapolis, Minn./South HS) picked up pitching wins for the Auggies, and
Bryant Nordby (JR, Brownton, Minn./McLeod West HS) claimed saves in both games. Ozga struck out three while walking three in five innings of work in the first game, while Glasenapp had three strikeouts in 4.2 innings of work in the second game. Nordby struck out two in 1.2 innings of relief.
Pierce hit a two-run double in the first inning of the first game to give the Auggies the early lead. Macalester trimmed the game to 2-1 with a run on a sacrifice fly in the fourth inning, but Augsburg scored the eventual winning run in the top of the seventh, as
Tim Gerding (SO, Robbinsdale, Minn./Cooper HS) doubled and scored fielder's choice by
Craig Henry (SR, Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial HS).
In the second game, after a leadoff double by
Jeff Butler (FY, Prior Lake, Minn.), Henry hit a sacrifice fly to drive him home in the first inning. Macalester took the lead with two runs in the bottom of the first, but Augsburg collected back-to-back home runs -- a two-run shot by Henry and a solo shot by Pierce -- in the third inning to take the lead for good.
Three more runs came across in the fifth, with one run scoring on an error and two more coming on a single by Pierce, and another run came across following an error in the sixth.
John Demgen (JR, Minneapolis, Minn./South HS) went 2-for-4 with a run scored in the first game for the Auggies, while scoring two runs in the second game. Henry went 2-for-3 with two runs scored in the second game.
Devin English went 5-for-9 in the doubleheader for Macalester, scoring three runs, while Nate Wilson-Traisman went had two doubles and two runs scored, and Mitch Glasser had two hits and three RBI.
Augsburg returns to MIAC play on Wednesday (4/7) at 2:30 p.m. with an MIAC doubleheader at Bethel.
