Auggies excel on power play

MINNEAPOLIS -- Scoring all four goals on power-play situations -- including three during a five-minute major penalty midway through the second period -- the Augsburg College men's hockey team scored a 4-0 win over Finlandia University (Mich.) in a nonconference contest on Tuesday evening at Ed Saugestad Rink.

Augsburg (7-3-1 overall) scored three goals in a 3:12 span during the major penalty in the second period, with Kris Reinthaler (SO, Graz, Austria/Spring Creek Academy (Texas) HS), Joel Sauer (SR, Madison, Wis./Memorial HS) and Trevor Tolibas (JR, Colorado Springs, Colo./Palmer HS) scoring. Nick Guran (JR, McHenry, Ill./McHenry East HS) assisted on two of the goals.

Augsburg outshot Finlandia (1-11-0 overall) by a 51-25 margin in the game, with Jon Zitur (JR, Buffalo, Minn.) stopping all 25 shots he faced to earn his first collegiate shutout in goal.

Ryan Donovan (SR, Pinckney, Mich.) started in goal for Finlandia and collected 30 saves before being relieved by Mike Wuthrich (JR, Houghton, Mich.) in the second period. Wuthrich stopped all 17 shots he faced in relief.

The Auggies jumped on the scoreboard midway through the first period, with Tedd Falk (JR, Mequon, Wis./Homestead HS) scoring from Nikki Holt (SR, Hermantown, Minn.) and Jon Barrick (FY, Litchfield, Minn.).

Taking advantage of the major penalty, Reinthaler scored his first goal of the season, assisted by Guran, at the 9:22 mark of the second frame, followed by Sauer's goal at the 12:16 mark, assisted by Guran and Mario Mjelleli (SR, Faribault, Minn./Shattuck-St. Mary's HS). 18 seconds later, Tolibas notched his second goal of the season, assisted by David Hines (JR, Sartell, Minn./St. Cloud Tech HS).

With the four power-play goals, Augsburg is now converting on a 29.4-percent (15-of-51) power-play percentage -- tops among Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference teams (overall statistics) and fifth-best among all NCAA Division III teams, according to the Collegehockeystats.net website.

Sauer and Guran are also among the nation's leaders in scoring. Sauer currently leads the MIAC's overall statistics in total points (20), while ranking fifth nationally in points per-game (1.82). His 13 assists are third-best among MIAC players and his 1.18 assists per-game are 10th-best nationally. Meanwhile, Guran ranks second in the MIAC in total points (19) and 11th nationally in points per-game (1.73), while ranking second in the MIAC in goals (11) and second nationally in goals per-game (1.00).

Augsburg returns to action on Friday (1/7) at 7 p.m. with a nonconference game at Wisconsin-Stout. Finlandia is now idle until a Jan. 14-15 home series against Lawrence (Wis.).
