MINNEAPOLIS --
Bri Clark (JR, Mound, Minn./Mound-Westonka HS) scored her team-leading ninth goal of the season in the 24th minute, giving Augsburg College its lone goal in a 1-0 victory over Gustavus Adolphus College in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference women's soccer game on Saturday evening at Edor Nelson Field.
Defender
Lindsey Niederhaus (SR, Ramsey, Minn./Anoka HS) fed a pass to
Olivia Muyres (FY, Rochester, Minn/Lourdes HS), who found Clark open for a shot from 15 yards away to the upper right corner of the goal in the 24th minute.
Augsburg's (7-6-1 overall, 4-2-1 MIAC) defense -- Niederhaus,
Alekzandra Miller (SO, St. Paul, Minn./Highland Park HS),
Carly Reimer (JR, Eagan, Minn./Henry Sibley HS) and
Bri Felton (FY, Fridley, Minn.) played the full 90 minutes and helped goalkeeper
Katie Gajewski (SO, Wausau, Wis./Wausau East HS) record her fifth shutout of the season and eighth of her career. Gajewski recorded four saves in the contest.
"We did not play as well as we would have liked, but we got the job done," said Augsburg head coach
Mike Navarre. "We fought hard, but were not as efficient as we could have been."
The win was Augsburg's third in its last four games, and keeps the Auggies in contention for a spot in the four-team MIAC postseason playoffs as the season enters its final weeks. With four league games remaining, Augsburg has 13 conference points (three points for a win, one point for a tie), just two points out of fourth place.
Augsburg dominated possession for most of the game, though Gustavus (3-10-0 overall, 1-6-0 MIAC) had several chances in the closing minutes. Augsburg outshot Gustavus by a 22-12 margin in the game.
Gustavus goalkeeper Jessica Richert (JR, Freeburg, Ill./Osan American HS) recorded seven saves in the game. Meghan McMillan (SR, Minneapolis, Minn./Holy Angels HS) had five shots in the contest for the Gusties, while Amanda Cartony (SO, Stillwater, Minn.) had two shots.
For Augsburg, Clark had eight shots in the game, while Muyres and
Molly Allen (FY, Stillwater, Minn.) had three shots apiece.
Augsburg hosts St. Catherine on Wednesday (10/19) at 7:30 p.m. at Edor Nelson Field, as part of the Auggies' week-long Homecoming celebration.
"We will take the points and move on. However, we have to continue to get better," Navarre said. "We will be excited to play our Homecoming game against St. Catherine on Wednesday."
