Auggies move up in playoff race

BOXSCORE BOXSCORE

MINNEAPOLIS -- Bri Clark (JR, Mound, Minn./Mound-Westonka HS) scored her team-leading 10th goal of the season in the 59th minute, giving the Augsburg College women's soccer team a 1-0 win over St. Catherine University in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game on Wednesday evening at Edor Nelson Field.

Taking a feed from Lindsey Niederhaus (SR, Ramsey, Minn./Anoka HS), Clark lofted a shot from 25 yards out into the net for the lone goal of the game for the Auggies (8-6-1 overall, 5-2-1 MIAC).

"We played well, we just didn't finish well," said Augsburg head coach Mike Navarre. "Nevertheless, we found a way to get the goal we needed for the win. Credit Bri Clark for being opportunistic and getting off a great strike from distance that provided us with the game-winner."

With the win, Augsburg moved into a tie for fourth place in the MIAC standings with Carleton, each with 16 league points (three points for a win, one point for a tie). Augsburg is one point behind third-place St. Olaf, two points behind second-place Concordia-Moorhead and three points behind conference-leader St. Benedict. There are seven teams within six points of first place, as the MIAC enters the final two weeks of the regular season. Augsburg has three conference games remaining in the regular season, in pursuit of a spot in the four-team MIAC postseason playoffs.

Augsburg dominated play throughout the contest against St. Catherine (1-15-0 overall, 0-9-0 MIAC). Augsburg claimed a 25-7 advantage in shots, including a 10-2 edge in shots-on-goal, while also collecting 13 corner kicks compared to St. Catherine's one.

"I was proud of our defense tonight," Navarre said. "Bri Felton (FY, Fridley, Minn.) and Lindsey Niederhaus were solid and Carly Reimer (JR, Eagan, Minn./Henry Sibley HS), Alekzandra Miller (SO, St. Paul, Minn./Highland Park HS), and Katie Gajewski (SO, Wausau, Wis./Wausau East HS) gave us the leadership and composure we needed as well."

Clark, who earned MIAC Athlete of the Week honors on Monday, now has 10 goals on the season, moving her into a tie for second place in the MIAC's overall statistics for goals scored. Her 10 goals are sixth-most in a single season in school history. She has at least one goal in nine of her 14 games played this season, including the last three games in a row and four of the last five games.

Augsburg goalkeeper Gajewski made two saves to record her sixth shutout of the season and ninth in her 23 career starts. St. Catherine goalkeeper Abbey Hinton (FY, St. Paul, Minn./Hill-Murray HS) had nine saves.

For Augsburg, Clark had seven shots in the game, while Courtney Gamrath (SR, St. Michael, Minn./St. Michael-Albertville HS) had five shots. Olivia Muyres (FY, Rochester, Minn./Lourdes HS) and Bri Dorale (JR, Ramsey, Minn./Anoka HS) had three shots each.

For St. Catherine, Lindsey Voss (SO, White Bear Lake, Minn.) had two shots.

Augsburg returns to action on Saturday (10/22) at Hamline University. Game time has been moved up to 11 a.m. on Saturday.

"We are playing better soccer and continue to work hard and be excited to play," Navarre said. "Despite losing some starters to injury, we are still a very strong side. However, we have to play better. Hamline will be ready for us on Saturday. They are a strong team and are having a great season."
