MINNEAPOLIS -- The Augsburg College women's soccer team dropped a 3-0 decision to Concordia College-Moorhead in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference contest on Wednesday evening at Edor Nelson Field.
Augsburg (8-8-1 overall, 5-4-1 MIAC) was outshot by a 20-7 margin by Concordia (10-2-5 overall, 6-1-3 MIAC), which clinched a spot in the four-team MIAC postseason playoffs with the victory.
Sarah Rounds (JR, Plymouth, Minn./Wayzata HS) scored in the 36th minute from Rochelle Hickerson (FY, Andover, Minn.), and Gina Weiss (SO, Monticello, Minn.) scored twice in a seven-minute span in the second half -- in the 70th minute from Laura Prosinski (FY, Billings, Mont./Billings West HS), and in the 77th minute from Elizabeth Robinson (FY, Minneapolis, Minn./Southwest HS) and Prosinski.
"All the credit goes to Concordia. In a must-win game for both teams they got it done and in the process all but put us out of the playoff race," said Augsburg head coach
Mike Navarre. "Down a goal in the second half, we had to press and get more numbers forward. Gina Weiss used her great speed and finishing ability to net two in the second half and send the Cobbers into the MIAC Playoffs."
Augsburg goalkeeper
Katie Gajewski (SO, Wausau, Wis./Wausau East HS) claimed eight saves in the game, with
Taylor Becker (SR, Red Wing, Minn.) making one save in relief.
Olivia Muyres (FY, Rochester, Minn./Lourdes HS) had two shots for the Auggies.
The game marked the final home contest for five Augsburg seniors -- Becker,
Laurie Barger (SR, Monticello, Minn.),
Courtney Gamrath (SR, St. Michael, Minn./St. Michael-Albertville HS),
Katie Jacobson (SR, St. Cloud, Minn./Apollo HS) and
Lindsey Niederhaus (SR, Ramsey, Minn./Anoka HS).
"We are very disappointed. We had an opportunity to make the postseason and did not take advantage of it," Navarre said. "I'm sorry for the seniors who worked so hard to get us near the top of the league, we just fell short. There is tremendous character on this team."
Augsburg closes its season on Saturday (10/29) as part of a doubleheader at St. Mary's University in Winona, Minn. The women's game will be at 1 p.m., with the men's game to follow at 3:30 p.m.
"We take a lot of pride in our program," Navarre said. "Despite the setback, I know we will do our best to finish the season on a positive note as we prepare for our last game at St. Mary's on Saturday."
