Jerise Washington (FY, Roseville, Minn./Mounds View HS) scored three rushing touchdowns, as the Augsburg College football team clinched its first winning season since 1999 with a 37-20 victory over Gustavus Adolphus College in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference contest on Saturday afternoon at Hollingsworth Field.
Augsburg improved to 6-3 overall, 4-3 in MIAC play with one game remaining in the season, clinching its 13th above-.500 finish in school history and first since a 6-4 overall (5-4 MIAC) finish in 1999. Gustavus dropped to 1-8 overall, 1-6 in MIAC play.
The Auggies scored the first 21 points of the game and led 28-7 at halftime. Washington scored three rushing touchdowns, while
Adam Carl (SO, Eagan, Minn.) caught two touchdown passes from
Marcus Brumm (SR, Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville North HS) and
Wesley Waytashek (JR, Little Falls, Minn.) kicked a 27-yard field goal.
Jeffrey Dubose scored two rushing touchdowns for Gustavus, while Elliott Herdina caught a 27-yard touchdown pass from Mike Strelow, accounting for the Gusties' scoring.
Washington rushed 27 times for 90 yards and his three touchdowns -- a three-yarder and one-yarder in the first quarter, and a two-yarder in the fourth quarter. It was the fifth time an Augsburg running back has scored multiple touchdowns in a game this season.
Carl claimed his second straight 100-yard receiving performance, setting career highs for the second straight week with 11 receptions for 115 yards and two second-quarter touchdowns -- a six-yarder with 14:35 left and an 11-yarder with 1:05 remaining.
Brumm completed 20-of-32 passing for 221 yards and two touchdowns. In his 26th career start for the Auggies, Brumm now has 6,846 passing yards on 570-of-1,069 passing -- each total second-best in school history. His 45 career passing touchdowns are third-best in school history, behind second-place 46 set by Derrin Lamker (1993-97). Jordan Berg (2006-08) holds each of Augsburg's career passing records -- 796-of-1,350 passing for 8,777 yards and 72 touchdowns.
The Auggies scored touchdowns on four of their six first-half drives, building a 28-7 halftime advantage. A 12-play, 70-yard, 4:12 drive resulted in Augsburg's first touchdown, on Washington's three-yard run at the 9:18 mark of the first quarter. Following a
Felix Coleman (FY, Alexandria, Minn./Jefferson HS) interception -- his team-high fourth of the season -- Augsburg marched nine plays in 62 yards, with Washington's one-yard scoring run with 37 seconds left in the opening frame capping the drive.
On the next Gustavus drive, a punt was blocked by
Phil Putratz (SO, Mazeppa, Minn./Zumbrota-Mazeppa HS) and recovered by
Adam Sonntag (JR, Green Lake, Wis.), who ran it 18 yards to the Gustavus 6-yard line. On the next play, Brumm completed his first touchdown pass to Carl.
Gustavus used an 11-play, 55-yard drive to score its first touchdown, on a five-yard run by Dubose, to cut the advantage to 21-7. But Augsburg scored on the next drive, with five passes to Carl for 64 yards on the nine-play, 74-yard drive, including an 11-yard scoring pass with 1:05 left in the first half.
Gustavus cut the lead to 28-14 in the third quarter, as a 13-play, 74-yard drive was capped by Dubose's second touchdown of the game, a two-yard run.
Washington's third touchdown came on its first drive of the fourth quarter, a two-yard touchdown with 12:55 left. Waytashek's 27-yard field goal with 5:58 left capped the Auggie scoring. Gustavus scored its final touchdown with 1:07 left on Herdina's 27-yard touchdown reception from Strelow.
Turner Johnson caught six passes for 111 yards to lead the Gusties, while Strelow rushed three times for 32 yards and Derek Lieser rushed seven times for 30 yards.
Defensively, Sonntag led the Auggies with eight tackles (two solo), whiel sharing a sack with
Aaron Perry (JR, Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial HS).
Edmond Smith (SR, Minneapolis, Minn./North HS) and
Bryce Vee (JR, Coon Rapids, Minn./Blaine HS) had seven tackles each, and Perry and
Tyler Phillips (SR, Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial HS) had six tackles each, with Phillips also claiming a fourth-quarter interception.
Joe Haas led the Gustie with 12 tackles (four solo), while Mitch Kleinschrodt, Matthew Keller and Nick Alverson had six tackles each.
Both teams conclude their seasons next Saturday (11/12) at 1 p.m., as Augsburg hosts Bethel at the Metrodome, and Gustavus plays at Carleton.
