ST. PETER, Minn. -- For the second straight season, the Augsburg College men's hockey campaign came to end in a multiple-overtime game at Gustavus Adolphus College.
This time, a goal 67 seconds into the second overtime lifted the Gusties to a 4-3 win over the Auggies in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference playoff first-round game on Friday afternoon at the Don Roberts Ice Rink.
John Lennartson (JR, Burnsville, Minn.),
Trevor Doden (JR, Red Wing, Minn.) and
Mario Mjelleli (SR, Faribault, Minn./Shattuck-St. Mary's HS) scored for Augsburg (14-9-3 overall), which reached the MIAC postseason playoffs for the third straight year and fourth time in the last five years.
Justin Lochner (SO, Sauk Rapids, Minn./Sauk Rapids-Rice HS) collected 55 saves in goal for Augsburg, as the Gusties (15-9-2 overall) outshot the Auggies by a 59-28 margin. Josh Swartout had 25 saves in goal for Gustavus.
After a scoreless first overtime, Zach May scored an unassisted goal for the game-winner 1:07 into the second overtime for the Gusties, which advanced to the MIAC's playoff semifinals on Saturday at 2 p.m. at top-seed Hamline.
The Gusties ended the Auggies' season for the second year in a row in a multi-overtime game. Last year, the Gusties scored a 6-5 win in the MIAC semifinals in the longest game in NCAA Division III men's hockey history -- 138:38 in four overtimes.
Augsburg jumped out to a 2-0 lead, as Lennartson scored a power-play goal from
Kris Reinthaler (SO, Graz, Austria/Spring Creek Academy (Texas) HS) and Doden at the 6:22 mark of the first period, and Doden scored from Reinthaler and Mjelleli at the 17:37 mark of the second period.
But Gustavus scored three goals in a 94-second span overlapping the last minute of the second period and opening minute of the third period. Ryan Johnson notched a power-play goal with 41 seconds left in the second frame, followed 21 seconds later by a Brad Wieck goal. Matt Schugel put the Gusties ahead with a goal 53 seconds into the third period.
Augsburg tied the game at the 3:17 mark of the third period, as Mjelleli scored a power-play goal from
Joel Sauer (SR, Madison, Wis./Memorial HS) and
Jim Jensen (SR, Plymouth, Minn./Osseo HS). The assist gave Sauer a point in his 13th straight game and 24th time in his 26 games this season.
Friday's game was the last for eight Auggie seniors -- Sauer, Jensen, Mjelleli,

Nikki Holt (SR, Hermantown, Minn.),
