Auggies go 2-1 in Illinois opener

LORAS GAME BOXSCORE
CENTRAL DOUBLEHEADER -- GAME 1 BOX | GAME 2 BOX

JACKSONVILLE, Ill. -- The Augsburg College baseball team opened its 2011 season with two victories in three games in Illinois on Sunday, topping Loras College (Iowa) 11-0 and splitting a doubleheader with Central College (Iowa) at Lenz Field.

After wintry weather forced a cancellation of Saturday's scheduled doubleheader with Loras, the Auggies faced the Duhawks in a single game on Sunday morning before their doubleheader with Central. Augsburg split its doublehader with the Dutch, winning the first game 5-3 in nine innings while falling 3-0 in the nightcap.

Against Loras, the Auggies pounded out 13 hits, while two Auggie pitchers combined for an eight-hit, eight-inning shutout. Bryant Nordby (SR, Brownton, Minn./McLeod West HS) started and struck out two while allowing six hits in six innings of work, and Adam Langer (JR, Kenyon, Minn./Kenyon-Wanamingo HS) stuck out three while allowing two in two innings of relief.

Adam Seaman (JR, Richfield, Minn.) and Mason Holmquist (SR, Prior Lake, Minn.) had three hits each for theAuggies, with Seaman driving in two runs and Holmquist driving in a run while scoring twice. Trent Anderson (JR, Eagan, Minn.) hit two doubles and drove in three runs, while Tim Gerding (JR, Robinsdale, Minn./Cooper HS) had two hits and scored three runs.

In the first game against Central, the game was tied 2-2 into the bottom of the eighth, but with the bases loaded for the Dutch, the Auggie defense converted a 1-2-3 double-play to end the threat. In the top of the ninth, Gerding hit a three-run home run to give the Auggies the lead, and despite giving up a run in the bottom of the ninth, the Auggies were able to claim the win. Seaman had two hits for the Auggies in the game. The Auggies had just two hits in the second game against Central.

Head coach Keith Bateman said that the Auggie pitchers threw well on the day, surrendering just one earned run in the three games. Craig Lynch (SO, Circle Pines, Minn./Centennial HS) started the first Central game, and Kristofer Ozga (SR, Hawthorn Woods, Ill./Stevenson HS) earning the win in relief. Jarron Farah (JR, Minneapolis, Minn./St. Anthony Village HS) started for the Auggies in the second game in the second game against the Dutch.

Augsburg takes to the road again during its spring break week, with nine games at the Greater Phoenix (Ariz.) Invitational over the week of March 13-18.
