Auggies drop duo at Gustavus

ST. PETER, Minn. -- Donald Blunt (SR, Richfield, Minn.) went 3-for-7 at the plate wtih a double, triple and two RBI for Augsburg College, but the Auggies dropped a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference baseball doubleheader to Gustavus Adolphus College on Tuesday afternoon at Gustie Field.

Blunt had his double and single, driving in two runs, in Augsburg's (7-13 overall, 2-6 MIAC) 9-7 first-game loss. Gustavus (5-11 overall, 3-3 MIAC) scored a 3-2 win in the second game to complete the sweep.

Alec Johnson (JR, Marine on St. Croix, Minn./Forest Lake HS) and Tom Petersen (JR, Hugo, Minn./White Bear Lake HS) also had three hits each in the doubleheader for the Auggies, while Brent Kolbow (SO, Forest Lake, Minn.) had a double in the first game. Tim Gerding (JR, Robbinsdale, Minn./Cooper HS) and John Demgen (SR, Minneapolis, Minn./South HS) drove in two runs each in the doubleheader.

Augsburg rallied from a 5-1, first-inning deficit to tie the game at 7-7 in the sixth inning of the first game, with the game-tying hit a two-run double by Blunt in the top of the sixth. But the Gusties took the lead back in the bottom of the inning, with runs coming across on an error and a single.

Augsburg used four pitchers in the first game, with relievers Bryant Nordby (SR, Brownton, Minn./McLeod West HS) and Brett Cloutier (SR, Baxter, Minn./Brainerd HS) recording three strikeouts each.

In the second game, the Gusties scored two runs in the second inning and another in the third, but the Auggies trimmed the lead to 3-2 in the fourth inning, as a two-out single by Gerding plated two runs.

Adam Jacobsen (SO, Wayzata, Minn./Orono HS) started and struck out two in three innings, with Adam Langer (JR, Kenyon, Minn./Kenyon-Wanamingo HS) and Kristofer Ozga (SR, Hawthorn Woods, Ill./Stevenson HS) each pitching scoreless relief.

Augsburg returns to MIAC play on Saturday (4/16) at 1 p.m., hosting St. Mary's in a doubleheader at Parade Stadium.
