Auggies claim sweep of Cardinals

MINNEAPOLIS -- Alec Johnson (JR, Marine on St. Croix, Minn./Forest Lake HS) had three hits and drove in three runs, while Mason Holmquist (SR, Prior Lake, Minn.) had three hits and scored two runs, as the Augsburg College baseball team claimed a sweep of St. Mary's University in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader on Sunday afternoon at Parade Stadium.

Augsburg (9-13 overall, 4-6 MIAC) rallied for victories in both games over St. Mary's (8-18 overall, 2-8 MIAC), winning 6-3 in the first game and 2-1 in the second game.

Bryant Nordby (SR, Brownton, Minn./McLeod West HS) pitched a complete-game victory for the Auggies in the first game, striking out four while walking one and allowing eight hits. In the second game, Craig Lynch (SO, Circle Pines, Minn./Centennial HS) earned the win, striking out two while allowing three walks and four hits in six innings of work. Jeff Boresz (JR, Chardon, Ohio/Mentor HS) picked up the save with a seventh inning of scoreless, one-hit relief.

The Auggies trailed 2-0 in the second inning, but rallied for six straight runs to take the lead in the first game. Donald Blunt (SR, Richfield, Minn.) doubled and scored on a Johnson sacrifice fly in the second inning, and a Brent Kolbow (SO, Forest Lake, Minn.) single drove home Holmquist in the third inning.

Augsburg sent 10 batters to the plate and scored four runs in the fifth inning. Kolbow hit a sacrifice fly to drove home #Trent Anderson (JR, Eagan, Minn.), Holmquist scored following a fielding error, and a single by Adam Seaman (JR, Richfield, Minn.) plated two runs.

Holmquist and Lou LaChapelle (SO, Eagan, Minn.) had two hits each for the Auggies in the first game.

Jake Lechner (SR, Shoreview, Minn./Hill-Murray HS) drove in two runs on a triple in the second inning for St. Mary's, while Vince Lulic (SO, Mendota Heights, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall HS) hit a single to drive in a run in the seventh inning.

In the second game, St. Mary's again struck first, as Lulic singled to drive home Cody Pfennig (SO, La Crosse, Wis./Central HS) in the top of the third inning.

The Auggies tied the game in the bottom of the third, as Blunt walked, advanced to third on a stolen base and wild pitch, and scored on an RBI single by Johnson. The Auggies took the lead in the bottom of the fifth, as Seaman walked, stole second and scored on an RBI single by Johnson.

Chris Bogie (SR, St. Paul, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall HS) pitched a complete game for the Cardinals, striking out two.

Augsburg returns to action on Monday (4/18) at 1 p.m., with a nine-inning nonconference game against Hamline at Parade Stadium. St. Mary's travels to face Dubuque (Iowa) in a nonconference doubleheader on Tuesday (4/19) at 2:30 p.m.
