Bryant Nordby (SR, Brownton, Minn./McLeod West HS) pitched 8.2 innings of shutout action on Saturday afternoon, but his Augsburg College baseball team dropped both games of a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader with St. John's University at Parade Stadium.
The Auggies (9-18 overall, 4-10 MIAC) fell 2-0 in 10 innings in the first game, and fell 4-0 to St. John's (15-8 overall, 9-3 MIAC) in the second game.
Nordby allowed just six hits while striking out five and walking three, throwing 110 pitches (71 strikes) in 8.2 innings of shutout action in the first game. His counterpart, St. John's starter Brett Kramer (SR, Baxter, Minn./Brainerd HS), also pitched well, striking out eight while walking two and allowing four hits on 111 pitches (73 strikes) in seven innings of work.
Both teams stranded seven runners on base in the first game, with Augsburg's defense converting three ground-ball double plays in the game.
In the 10th inning, the Johnnies' Brian Skluzacek (SR, Cold Spring, Minn./Rocori HS) stroked a two-run double to right field for the lone scoring of the game.
The second game was also shaping up to be a pitchers' duel between Augsburg's
Craig Lynch (SO, Circle Pines, Minn./Centennial HS) and St. John's Connor Cline (SO, Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson HS). Cline threw a complete-game shutout, allowing just two hits while striking out three. Lynch allowed just one hit in his four innings of work, striking out four while walking three.
The Johnnies got on the board in the fourth inning with an unearned run on an error, then scored in the fifth inning on a sacrifice fly by Max Forster (SO, Minnetonka, Minn./Hopkins HS). Two more runs came across in the seventh inning on an RBI double by Forster and an RBI single by Kramer.
Brent Kolbow (SO, Forest Lake, Minn.) had two hits for Augsburg in the doubleheader.
Both teams return to MIAC play on Tuesday (4/26) at 2:30 p.m., with Augsburg playing at St. Olaf and St. John's hosting Hamline.
