Auggies split with Royals

GAME 1 BOXSCORE | GAME 2 BOXSCORE

ARDEN HILLS, Minn. -- Adam Seaman (JR, Richfield, Minn.) went 4-for-6 with two doubles, a home run, four runs scored and five RBI, leading Augsburg College to a split of a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference baseball doubleheader with Bethel University on Wednesday afternoon at Bethel's Hargis Park.

Donald Blunt (SR, Richfield, Minn.) also went 4-for-6 at the plate with a home run and three runs scored, while also collecting his first collegiate pitching save with a scoreless seventh inning in Augsburg's 5-4, second-game victory. Augsburg (6-10 overall, 1-3 MIAC) dropped the first game 10-8 to Bethel (9-7 overall, 2-2 MIAC).

The games were originally scheduled to be played at Parade Stadium, Augsburg's home ballpark, but were moved to Bethel due to field conditions. Augsburg was the home team in both games.

Seaman had a two-run homer and a double in the first game, going 3-for-3, while hitting a two-run double and driving in a run on a bases-loaded walk in the second game. Tom Petersen (JR, Hugo, Minn./White Bear Lake HS) went 3-for-5 with two doubles, four RBI and two runs scored in the doubleheader for the Auggies.

Augsburg rallied from a 4-1 deficit with four runs in the fifth inning to capture the second-game victory. Augsburg sent 10 batters to the plate in the fifth, as Seaman's double drove in two runs, and he later scored on a double-steal. Petersen hit a sacrifice fly to drive home the go-ahead run.

The Auggie rally earned the win for pitcher Jeff Boresz (JR, Chardon, Ohio/Mentor HS), who pitched two innings of scoreless relief, striking out three while not allowing a hit or walk. Adam Langer (JR, Kenyon, Minn./Kenyon-Wanamingo HS) pitched a scoreless sixth inning, and Blunt, making just his second collegiate pitching appearance, struck out one while walking one in a scoreless seventh to earn the save.

The Royals took a 4-1 lead off of starter Eren Cur (SO, Plymouth, Minn./Wayzata HS), with Jay Slick (JR, River Falls, Wis.) driving in two runs on a single in the first inning and a double in the fourth inning, and Sean Bethke (JR, Mahtomedi, Minn.) plating two runs on a double in the third.

In the first game, Bethel did most of its damage in the first inning, scoring six runs on five hits, while sending 11 batters to the plate. The Royals added another run in the third inning to lead 7-1.

But Augsburg rallied back to cut the lead to 7-6 after six innings. Blunt hit a solo homer in the second inning, two runs came across following a double by Petersen in the fourth inning, and another Petersen double plated two runs in the sixth inning, with another run coming across following a throwing error.

Bethel scored three runs in the top of the seventh, on two RBI singles and a sacrifice fly, and Augsburg scored twice in the bottom of the inning, with Seaman hitting a two-run homer – his team-leading third of the season.

Matt Johnson (SR, Vadnais Heights, Minn./White Bear Lake HS) pitched a complete-game victory for the Royals, striking out six while walking one. Augsburg used four pitchers in the game, with Adam Jacobsen (SR, Wayzata, Minn./ORono HS) pitching six innings of one-run relief, striking out two while allowing just three hits.

Petersen, Seaman and Blunt had three hits each for the Auggies in the first game, with Brent Kolbow (SO, Forest Lake, Minn.) adding two hits. Buddy Flaherty (JR, Victoria, Minn./Southwest Christian HS) had three hits and drove in three runs for Bethel, while Jesse Nickols (SO, Arden Hills, Minn./Mounds View HS) went 2-for-4 with three RBI and two runs scored.

Both teams return to MIAC play on Saturday (4/9) at 1 p.m., with Augsburg playing at Concordia-Moorhead and Bethel playing at St. Thomas.
