Auggies fall at Hamline

ST. PAUL, Minn. -- Mason Holmquist (SR, Prior Lake, Minn.) and Trent Anderson (JR, Eagan, Minn.) each went 5-for-6 at the plate in the doubleheader for Augsburg College, but the Auggies dropped a pair of Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference baseball contests to Hamline University on Sunday afternoon at Midway Stadium.

Augsburg (10-21 overall, 5-13 MIAC) lost the first game 9-3 to Hamline (19-11 overall, 12-4 MIAC) and the second game 5-2.

Donald Blunt (SR, Richfield, Minn.) hit two doubles and scored both of Augsburg's runs in the second game, and Tom Petersen (JR, Hugo, Minn./White Bear Lake HS) had two RBI in the doubleheader for the Auggies.

Hamline pulled away early in both games, scoring eight runs in the first three innings in the first game and all five of its runs in the first two innings in the second game. In both games, Auggie relievers were effective, as Eren Cur (SO, Plymouth, Minn./Wayzata HS) pitched 4.2 innings with three strikeouts in the first game, and Adam Langer (JR, Kenyon, Minn./Kenyon-Wanamingo HS) struck out three while allowing just one walk and one hit in 4.2 innings of relief in the second game.

In the first game, Augsburg scored twice in the third inning, with Jeff Butler (SO, Prior Lake, Minn.) driving in a run on a fielder's choice and Adam Seaman (JR, Richfield, Minn.) plating a run on a single. The Auggies scored another run in the fifth inning, as Petersen drove home Butler on a single.

In the second game, Blunt doubled and scored on a single by P{etersen in the fourth inning, and Blunt doubled and scored on an Anderson single in the sixth inning.

Holmquist went 3-for-3 in the first game and 2-for-3 in the second game for the Auggies, while Anderson went 2-for-3 in the first game and 3-for-3 in the second game. Brent Kolbow (SO, Forest Lake, Minn.) went 3-for-4 for the Auggies in the second game.

For Hamline, Tony Rogers went 5-for-7 at the plate with two doubles, three runs scored and four RBI in the doubleheader. Matt Mullendore picked up the pitching win for the Auggies with 4.0 innings of work in the first game, and Cass Kreitlow pitched a complete game, striking out seven, to earn the second-game win.

Augsburg closes its season on Thursday (5/5) at 2:30 p.m., hosting Carleton at Parade Stadium.
