ST. PAUL, Minn. --
Bri Clark (JR, Mound, Minn./Mound-Westonka HS) scored the game-winning goal 2:58 into overtime, giving her Augsburg College women's soccer team a 2-1 victory over the University of St. Thomas in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference contest at the St. Thomas South Field.
Trailing 1-0 with 7:32 remaining, Augsburg (4-3-1 overall, 2-0-1 MIAC) converted a penalty kick from
Courtney Gamrath (SR, St. Michael, Minn./St. Michael-Albertville HS) to tie the game, forcing overtime.
Clark scored her team-leading sixth goal of the season from
Molly Allen (FY, Stillwater, Minn.) and
Olivia Muyres (FY, Rochester, Minn./Lourdes HS) 2:58 into the first overtime period, giving the Auggies the victory over St. Thomas (4-2-0 overall, 2-1-0 MIAC), ranked
No. 20 in the latest National Soccer Coaches Association of America Division III national rankings.
"We played well today," said Augsburg head coach
Mike Navarre. "We knew it would be difficult as St. Thomas is one of the best teams in the nation. But we have had some success against them in the past and came into the game confident."
Augsburg is now 4-2-2 in its last eight meetings with St. Thomas, winning the last two meetings in a row. The win was Augsburg's first-ever in a game played at St. Thomas.
Augsburg outshot St. Thomas by a 10-6 margin, including a 7-3 edge in the second half and overtime. Gamrath had three shots in the game, while Allen, Clark and Muyres had two shots each.
Katie Gajewski (SO, Wausau, Wis./Wausau East HS) collected three saves in goal for the win for the Auggies.
St. Thomas' goal came in the 79th minute, as Mary Grace Flesher scored from Stephanie McCartan. Jenna Savino had two shots for the Tommies, and goalkeeper Callan Faulkner had three saves.
Augsburg returns to MIAC play on Wednesday (9/28) at 4 p.m., with a game at St. Benedict.
"We are off to a good start, but understand how difficult the MIAC is and will have our hands full again on Wednesday with another MIAC playoff team from last year in St. Benedict," Navarre said.
