Uahengo's goal lifts Auggies to win

BOXSCORE BOXSCORE

MINNEAPOLIS -- Gottlieb Uahengo (SO, Windhoek, Namibia/St. George's College) scored a dramatic goal in the 68th minute, lifting Augsburg College to a 1-0 victory over Whitman College (Wash.) in a nonconference men's soccer game on Thursday evening at Edor Nelson Field.

Uahengo redirected a service by Harald Fauskanger (FY, Bergen, Norway) into the right front corner of the net, following a drive by Mathias Macody Lund (SO, Bergen, Norway), to give Augsburg (1-0-1 overall) the victory over Whitman (0-1-1 overall).

"Gottlieb's finish was spectacular," said Augsburg head coach Greg Holker. "It all started with a strong ball from Mathias to Harald to get him behind the back four. Harry did the work at that point to get service to a tightly marked 'G' for a powerful effort."

Augsburg outshot Whitman by a 15-11 margin, including an 11-5 advantage in the first half. Goalkeeper Clayton Lynch (SO, Cedar Rapids, Minn.) claimed his second straight shutout for the Auggies with four saves. He has not allowed a goal in all of Augsburg's 200 minutes played this season, and extended his personal shutout streak to 272:34, dating to last season.

"Lynch was stellar once again. The parry he made over the bar was another game-saver," Holker said. "I thought David Scheller (SR, Maple Grove, Minn.) was very good tonight. #O.P. Marcellino# (JR, Rochester, Minn./Century HS) was a significant difference maker in midfield, as he broke up a lot of their play in the second half."

Ahmed Gobana (SR, Burnsville, Minn.) had four shots for the Auggies, while Macody Lund, Uahengo, Mohamed Sankoh (SO, St. Paul, Minn./Como Park HS) and Josh Sweeney (JR, Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson HS) had two shots each.

The victory also came at a cost, as Holker noted that midfielder Edi Becerra (SO, Inver Grove Heights, Minn./Minneapolis Southwest HS) suffered an injury during the game.

"It was a good win against a high quality side in Whitman. Unfortunately, it was soured by the loss of one of our key players for the season," Holker said. "That injury is devastating -- it's impossible to watch a player work so hard and have it all taken away in an instant."

Leland Matthaeus had six shots for Whitman, while Junpei Tsuji and Andrew Clark had two shots each. Michael Bathurst had six saves in goal for Whitman.

Augsburg opens Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play on Wednesday (10/14) at 4 p.m., facing Bethel University in Arden Hills, Minn.

"We definitely have a long way to go, but it's promising to find a way to win," Holker said. "We have a few more days to get better before we open up the MIAC portion of our schedule on Wednesday against a currently undefeated Bethel team."
