SPRINGFIELD, Ill. -- The Augsburg College wrestling team won both of its matches at the National Wrestling Coaches Association Division III National Duals on Saturday, advancing to Sunday's semifinals at the Prairie Capital Convention Center.
No. 2-ranked Augsburg topped unranked Rhode Island College 41-14 in the opening round, then claimed a 30-13 win over No. 10-ranked Olivet College (Mich.) in the quarterfinals. Augsburg will face No. 3-ranked Ithaca College (N.Y.) in the semifinals on Sunday at 11 a.m. Top-ranked Wartburg (Iowa) and No. 4-ranked Wisconsin-La Crosse will meet in the other semifinal. The championship and third-place matches will be at 3 p.m. on Sunday.
Since the NWCA began the Division III National Duals in 2002, the trophy has rested at either Augsburg or Wartburg (Iowa). Augsburg has won the title five times (2002, 2005, 2007, 2009, 2010), while Wartburg has also won the crown five times (2003, 2004, 2006, 2008, 2011). Augsburg has placed second at the National Duals three times (2003, 2004, 2006) and placed third twice (2008, 2011).
Augsburg 197-pounder
Brad Baus (JR, Mukwonago, Wis.), the No. 5-ranked wrestler nationally in his weight class, claimed two pins on Saturday, as the Auggies used late rallies to win each match. Against Rhode Island College, he claimed a 1:13 pin of Kyle Humphries, and against Olivet's Justin Leonard, he scored a 6:13 pin to clinch the match victory. Baus is now 14-4 on the season.
No. 2-ranked 165-pounder
Orlando Ponce (SR, Hialeah, Fla./Hialeah-Miami Lakes HS) scored two wins to improve to 8-0 on the season and 100-31 in his career, a 42-second pin in the opening match and a 5-2 win over No. 6-ranked James Myers of Olivet in the second match.
Against Rhode Island College, the Auggies rallied from a 14-11 deficit after five matches with four straight pins -- from Ponce,
Josh Kohler (JR, Monticello, Minn.),
Matt Hechsel (FY, Apple Valley, Minn.) and Baus -- to take a commanding 35-14 lead. A forfeit win ended the match.
Against Olivet, the Auggies held a slim 14-9 lead after five matches, but won four of the last five bouts to claim the 30-13 win. Augsburg won seven of the 10 bouts in the match.
Leading 17-13 after seven bouts, Hechsel claimed a critical 6-4 overtime victory over Josh Crawford to give the Auggies a 20-13 advantage. Heavyweight
Chad Johnson (SO, Ferryville, Wis./De Soto HS), the No. 1 ranked wrestler in his weight class, improved to 18-1 with a 14-0, major-decision win to close the match.
Augsburg is now 37-5 in NWCA Division III National Duals competition since 2002. Augsburg also appeared in five NWCA National Duals competitions prior to the 2002 season, when the defending Division III national champion was invited to compete with Division I squads. Augsburg is 42-14 all-time in NWCA National Duals competition.
