BOXSCORE MINNEAPOLIS -- A goal in the 79th minute proved to be the difference, as the College of St. Scholastica scored a 1-0 nonconference women's soccer victory over host Augsburg College on Tuesday evening at Edor Nelson Field.
In a game between two regionally-ranked teams, St. Scholastica (10-4-1 overall) claimed the lone goal of the game with 11:52 remaining, as Kelsey Kehtel (SO, Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS) scored on a curving goal from 20 yards out. Kaylee Benson (FY, Anoka, Minn.) was credited with the assist.
Augsburg (9-3-2 overall) entered the game as the No. 6-ranked team in the latest
National Soccer Coaches Association of America/Continental Tire NCAA Division III North Region poll, while St. Scholastica was in the No. 9 spot in the same poll.
Augsburg outshot St. Scholastica by an 18-10 margin, including a 12-6 advantage in the second half.
Lexi Felix (FY, Kailua, Hawaii/Iolani HS) had five saves in goal for Augsburg, while Kelsey Reeves (FY, Eagle River, Alaska) had seven saves for St. Scholastica.
"Whenever you out-shoot teams and lose, its tough," said Augsburg head coach
Mike Navarre. "It's especially tough when you give up a soft goal and lose 1-0. Such was the case tonight. However, we had opportunities and failed to capitalize, so we have to account for that as well."
Taylor Kuramoto (SO, Rochester, Minn./John Marshall HS) had five shots for the Auggies, while
Marie Fitzgerald (FY, Fort Atkinson, Wis.) had three shots.
Carly Reimer (SR, Eagan, Minn./Henry Sibley HS),
Kelsey Sorensen (SR, Eden Prairie, Minn.) and
Molly Allen (SO, Stillwater, Minn.) had two shots apiece.
Augsburg returns to Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play on Friday (10/19) at 7:30 p.m., hosting Hamline at Edor Nelson Field. Two of Augsburg's final three games of the regular season are at home.
"We can't feel sorry for ourselves," Navarre said. "We have a huge game on Friday versus Hamline, so we will put this one behind us and move on."
