BOXSCORE MINNEAPOLIS --
Olivia Muyres (SO, Rochester, Minn./Lourdes HS) had a goal and an assist, and
Katie Gajewski (JR, Wausau, Wis./Wausau East HS) collected nine saves in goal, as the Augsburg College women's soccer team claimed a 3-0 victory over Hamline University in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference contest on Friday evening at Edor Nelson Field.
Bri Clark (SR, Mound, Minn./Mound-Westonka HS),
Bri Dorale (SR, Ramsey, Minn./Anoka HS) and Muyres scored goals for the Auggies, who improved to 10-4-2 overall, 5-2-2 in MIAC play. Hamline drops to 11-4-1 overall, 4-4-1 in MIAC play.
With the victory, Augsburg moved into sole possession of second place in the MIAC standings, with two games remaining in the regular season. Augsburg has 17 conference points (three points for a win, one point for a tie), four points behind conference-leader Concordia-Moorhead (7-1-0 MIAC, 21 points) -- Augsburg's next opponent on Tuesday (10/23) at 1:30 p.m. in Moorhead, Minn. Augsburg is now three points ahead of Bethel and St. Olaf, and four points ahead of St. Benedict and Hamline in the MIAC standings. The remainder of the MIAC have conference games on Saturday (10/20).
"We still have work to do, but this win obviously puts us in a nice position going forward," said Augsburg head coach
Mike Navarre. "However, Concordia will be a strong test for us on Tuesday, so we will have to play extremely well in order to do well on the road in Moorhead."
Clark struck first for the Auggies in the 35th minute with her eighth goal of the season, completing a set of solid passes from Muyres and
Taylor Kuramoto (SO, Rochester, Minn./John Marshall HS). Clark's eight goals are currently third-best among MIAC players in overall statistics, and her 20 points are fifth-best.
Augsburg added two insurance goals in a 6:24 span late in the game. Dorale scored her second goal of the season in the 83rd minute off assists by
Marie Fitzgerald (FY, Fort Atkinson, Wis.) and
Rachel Nelson (JR, Coon Rapids, Minn.), collecting a cross blocked by the goalkeeper and putting it in the net. Muyres scored her sixth goal of the season in the 89th minute, completing a service from
Molly Allen (SO, Stillwater, Minn.).
"I was very proud of our effort tonight. We all knew the importance of the game and I felt our players responded very well to the challenge," Navarre said. "Hamline is a strong team. Ted Zingman has done an outstanding job of building the Hamline program into a contender."
Gajewski earned the shutout victory with a nine-save effort, including several dramatic saves in the second half off of Hamline shots. Hamline outshot Augsburg by a 17-13 mark. Piper goalkeeper Molly Jacobs (JR, Portland, Ore./Central Catholic HS) had four saves.
