Auggies fall in closing seconds

BOXSCORE MOORHEAD, Minn. -- Two goals in the final 10 minutes of the second half, including a goal with 20 seconds remaining, gave Concordia College-Moorhead a 2-1 victory over visiting Augsburg College in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference women's soccer game on Tuesday afternoon at the Jake Christiansen Athletics Complex.

Olivia Muyres (SO, Rochester, Minn./Lourdes HS) scored the lone goal of the game for Augsburg (10-5-2 overall, 5-3-2 MIAC) in the 19th minute, off assists by Bri Clark (SR, Mound, Minn./Mound-Westonka HS) and Molly Allen (SO, Stillwater, Minn.). Augsburg had to play with just 10 players after a red card in the 27th minute. Lexi Felix (FY, Kailua, Hawaii/Iolani HS) played 63 minutes in goal for the Auggies, collecting three saves.

MIAC regular-season champion Concordia (13-3-1 overall, 9-1-0 MIAC) tied the game in the 81st minute on Libby Fransdal's goal, assisted by Gina Weiss and Laura Prosinski. The Cobbers took the lead at the 89:40 mark, when Sarah Rounds scored from Emma Ekdahl.

"We did well to score early, but the game obviously changed when we got a red card and had to play short," said Augsburg head coach Mike Navarre. "Nevertheless, we had a great chance to win but unfortunately could not close it out. Credit Concordia -- they showed why they are the champs getting two late goals to win."

Augsburg remains in the hunt for a spot in the four-team MIAC postseason playoffs. Concordia has clinched a playoff berth, but eight teams remain in the hunt for the remaining three playoff spots. Augsburg is currently in a tie for second place with Bethel, as both have 17 conference points (three points for a win, one for a tie). The remainder of the conference plays its penultimate round of regular-season games on Wednesday (10/24).

Augsburg closes its regular season on Saturday (10/27) at 3:30 p.m. with a home game against St. Mary's at Edor Nelson Field.

"We are still very much alive and will regroup and be ready for our game on Saturday versus St Mary's, which has playoff implications," Navarre said.
