ST. THOMAS GAME NOTES
ST. PAUL, Minn. --
Tyler Swanson (SR, Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville North HS) caught six passes for 88 yards and a third-quarter touchdown, but the Augsburg College football team was unable to overcome an early deficit in a 30-14 loss to the University of St. Thomas in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference contest on Saturday afternoon at O'Shaughnessy Stadium.
Quarterback
Ayrton Scott (FY, Minneapolis, Minn./Southwest HS) accounted for 259 yards of total offense for the Auggies (5-3 overall, 4-3 MIAC) in the game, throwing for 169 yards and a touchdown on 12-of-32 passing with an interception, while rushing for a team-high 90 yards on 22 carries -- snapping a streak of seven straight 100-yard-plus rushing games to start his career.
Jack Kaiser rushed for 110 yards on 20 carries to lead the Tommies (8-0 overall, 6-0 MIAC), ranked No. 3 nationally in the latest American Football Coaches Association Division III national poll and No. 4 in the latest D3football.com national poll. Quarterback Ben Duncan scored on two rushing touchdowns in the first half for St. Thomas.
The Tommies built a 20-0 halftime lead, while Augsburg scored both its touchdowns in the second half. St. Thomas outgained Augsburg by a 439-293 margin -- the first time Augsburg has been held under 400 yards of total offense this season. St. Thomas rushed for 309 yards, with four Tommies gaining 30 or more yards on the ground. Brenton Braddock rushed for 79 yards on 13 carries, while Kyler Anderson rushed six times for 69 yards and Duncan rushed for 32 yards on nine carries.
Augsburg got on the scoreboard late in the third quarter, capping a 10-play, 92-yard, 4:57 drive with an eight-yard touchdown pass from Scott to Swanson, Swanson's team-leading eighth touchdown reception of the season. The Auggies' final score came in the last minute of the game, as Scott scored on a seven-yard run with 10 seconds left to play, capping a 12-play, 76-yard drive over 3:26.
St. Thomas scored its first-half touchdowns on a Duncan 12-yard run, a 21-yard run by Kaiser and a one-yard run by Duncan. Paul Graupner kicked a 27-yard field goal and Dom Truoccolo scored on a one-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter to cap the Tommie scoring.
Wesley Waytashek (SR, Little Falls, Minn.) caught three passes for 35 yards for the Auggies, while
Jerise Washington (SO, Roseville, Minn./Mounds View HS) rushed for 34 yards on 12 carries and caught a 25-yard pass from Scott.
Scott expanded upon his single-season school rushing record with his 90-yard effort. He now has a conference-leading 1,124 rushing yards on 169 carries -- the lone MIAC player to have more than 1,000 rushing yards so far this season. Combined with 1,736 passing yards, Scott now has 2,860 yards of total offense this season -- a 357.5 yards-per-game average.
Defensively, Augsburg's
Felix Coleman (SO, Alexandria, Minn./Jefferson HS) had a career-high 11 tackles (11 solo), his sixth career double-digit tackle performance. Fellow linebacker
Bryce Vee (SR, Coon Rapids, Minn./Blaine HS) also had 11 tackles (seven solo), bringing his career total to 270 total tackles (73 solo).
Chris DeVet (SO, Shoreview, Minn./Mounds View HS) had a sack and two tackles-for-loss, bringing his team-leading tackles-for-loss total to 8.0 this season.
For St. Thomas, Steve Dejewski and Harry Pitera had eight tackles apiece, with Pitera recording a sack, 2.5 tackles-for-loss and a forced fumble.
Both teams return to action next Saturday (11/3), with Augsburg playing a nonconference game at Macalester at 1 p.m., and St. Thomas playing at Concordia-Moorhead at 1:10 p.m.
