Dan Kornbaum (JR, Little Falls, Minn./Little Falls HS) scored 27 points to lead the Augsburg College men's basketball team to a 71-65 win over Colorado College in a nonconference contest in the first round of the Colorado College Thanksgiving Classic at Reid Arena.
Kornbaum hit 13-of-15 from the field and added seven rebounds to lead Augsburg (2-0) to the victory over head coach
Aaron Griess' alma mater. Also scoring in double figures for Augsburg was
Andy Seidlitz (JR, New Hope, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS) and
Tyler Schmidt (SR, Le Sueur, Minn./Le Sueur-Henderson HS), who scored 16 and 11 points respectively.
Colorado College (0-3) was led by Chris Lesnansky, who matched Kornbaum's game-high 27 points, while adding 11 rebounds and pair of assists.
The Tigers scored the first four points of the game, but a Kornbaum dunk at the 15:09 mark gave the Auggies their first lead of the evening. Augsburg used a 9-2 run over a 3:16 span to take a six-point advantage with just under 10 minutes to play. The Auggies extended their lead to eight on three occassions, but couldn't quite extend the lead to double digits and took a 38-30 lead into the locker room at the intermission.
The Augsburg lead stayed around 10 points for the majority of the second half, but a Colorado College 3-pointer cut the Auggie lead to 69-64 with 2:29 left to play, and a free throw at the 1:40 mark cut the lead down to just four. A pair of free throws by
Parker Hines (JR, Lakeville, Minn./Minnehaha Academy HS) with 31 seconds to play sealed the 71-65 win for the Auggies.
For the game, Augsburg shot a season-high 60.4 percent (29-of-48), while holding the Tigers to just 39.1 percent (25-of-64). Augsburg claimed a 32-28 advantage on the boards and claimed a 40-28 advantage in points in the paint.
Augsburg returns to action tomorrow as it takes on Benedictine University (Ill.) in the final round of the Colorado College tournament, with tip-off schedule to begin at 6 p.m. CST.
