Hines leads Auggies to victory over Gusties

BOXSCORE ST. PETER, Minn. -- For the second time this season, Parker Hines (JR, Lakeville, Minn./Minnehaha Academy HS) scored more than 20 points, scoring 22 to lead the Augsburg College men's basketball team to a 81-73 victory over Gustavus Adolphus College in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opener for both teams on Wednesday night at Gus Young Court.

Hines led Augsburg (4-0 overall, 1-0 MIAC) with a game-high 22 points on 7-of-11 shooting from the floor, including 5-for-6 from three-point range, while adding four rebounds and four assists. Dan Kornbaum (JR, Little Falls, Minn./Little Falls HS) continued his strong season, posting a game-high nine rebounds and adding 13 points. Brett Rasmussen (FY, Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville North HS) and Andy Seidlitz (JR, New Hope, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS) also had strong nights for the Auggies. Rassmussen posted 15 points and seven rebounds, while Seidlitz recorded 12 points and six assists.

Gustavus (1-2 overall, 0-1 MIAC) was led by Ben Biewen, who finished with 19 points, seven rebounds, three assists and a blocked shot.

The Auggies started the night on an 11-2 run and led game from start to finish. Gustavus pulled within four (16-12) with just under 10 minutes to play in the first half, but Augsburg countered with an 8-2 run to extend its lead back to double digits. A Hines three-pointer just before the buzzer gave Augsburg a 37-24 lead at the intermission.

The Auggies began the second half just as they ended the first, with a three-pointer, this time by Tyler Schmidt (SR, Le Sueur, Minn./Le Sueur-Henderson HS) -- who now has connected on a three-pointer in 39 straight games in his career. The Auggies extended their lead to as many as 21 points before the Gusties went on a 16-1 run to pull the score to 58-64 with 6:21 left to play in the game. Augsburg was able to convert 9-of-10 free throws in the final three minutes to seal the 81-73 victory for Augsburg.

For the game, Augsburg shot 50.9 percent (28-of-55) from the field, while the Gusties converted on 45.3 percent (29-of 64) of their shots. The Auggies claimed a 41-28 advantage on the boards and shot a blistering 56.3 percent (9-of-16) from beyond the arc while holding Gustavus to just 28.6 percent (6-of-21) from downtown.

Augsburg returns to action on Saturday (12/1) when it hosts Concordia College-Moorhead in a men's and women's doubleheader. Women's action begins at 1 p.m. with the men scheduled to tip off at 3 p.m.
