BOXSCORE RIVER FALLS, Wis. -- Four different Augsburg College men's hockey players scored goals, but it was not enough as the University of Wisconsin-River Falls claimed a 7-4 nonconference victory on Thursday night at Hunt Arena.
Jon Barrick (JR, Litchfield, Minn.),
George Jackson (SO, Sewickley, Pa./Quaker Valley HS),
Derek Loisel (JR, Coon Rapids, Minn.) and
Niklas Almstrom (JR, Medina, Minn./Benilde-St. Margaret's HS) scored goals for Augsburg (3-8-1 overall) in Thursday's game. Almstrom had a goal and an assist, and
Loren Egan (SR, Brooklyn Park, Minn./Totino-Grace HS) had two assists for the Auggies.
Barrick scored the first goal of the game, just 2:52 into the first period, but Wisconsin-River Falls (6-5-1 overall) scored five unanswered goals to take a 5-1 advantage. Blake Huppert scored two goals and added an assist for the Falcons, while Jeff Burke, Willie Hess, Adam Cardwell and Alec Hagaman had a goal and assist each. Zach Schrotenboer had the other Wisconsin-River Falls goal.
Barrick scored his first goal of the season from Egan early in the first period, but the Falcons scored three goals in a 1:40 span midway through the period, then scored twice in a 1:29 span early in the second period to take a 5-1 lead. Jackson scored at the 10:42 mark of the second period, and Loisel followed with a goal from Almstrom and
Tom Kuhn () 1:48 later to cut the host's lead to 5-3.
But the Falcons scored two more goals to build the lead, with Almstrom scoring the final goal of the game, assisted by
Ben McClellan (SO, Cottage Grove, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall HS), at the 7:31 mark of the third period.
Augsburg outshot Wisconsin-River Falls by a 32-16 margin.
Justin Lochner (SR, Sauk Rapids, Minn./Sauk Rapids-Rice HS) had eight saves in goal for Augsburg, with
John Bretzman (SO, Mendota Heights, Minn./St. Croix Lutheran HS) recording a save in relief in the second period. Scott Lewan had 28 saves in goal for Wisconsin-River Falls.
Augsburg is now idle for the holiday break, returning to action on Friday, Jan. 4 at 7 p.m. with a nonconference game at the College of St. Scholastica in Duluth, Minn.
