Augsburg starts 6-0 for first time since 1997

BOXSCORE ARDEN HILLS, Minn. -- Reigning MIAC Men's Basketball Athlete of the Week Dan Kornbaum (JR, Little Falls, Minn./Little Falls HS) continued to lead Augsburg College, as the Auggies posted a 59-50 victory over Bethel University in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action on Monday night at the Robertson Center. With the win, Augsburg moves to 6-0 overall (3-0 MIAC), starting with six consecutive victories for the first time since the 1997-98 school year when the team posted seven straight to start the season.

Kornbaum posted a 17-point, eight-rebound effort on the night, while shooting 8-of-11 from the floor. Andy Seidlitz (JR, New Hope, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS) also had a strong performance for the Auggies, posting career-highs in rebounds (10) and assists (siz), while adding six points on a perfect 6-for-6 night from the free throw line. Parker Hines (JR, Lakeville, Minn./Minnehaha Academy HS) continued to show why he is one of the top point guards in the MIAC, recording six assists, while adding nine points and a pair of steals.

Bethel (2-4 overall, 0-3 MIAC) was led by Kyle Zinnerman, who finished with 13 points and nine rebounds.

In an exciting game that saw nine tied scores and five lead changes, the teams were deadlocked at 23-23 at the intermission -- and the second half proved to be just as exciting as the first. Both teams traded baskets in the opening 10 minutes of action, but the Augsburg defense was able to hold the Royal offense scoreless for a 3:47 span, while building a 47-39 advantage. Unfortunately, the eight-point lead was short-lived, as the Royals rallied with an 8-0 run of their own to tie things up 47-47 with 3:17 to play in the game.

A Kornbaum layup and Tyler Schmidt (SR, Le Sueur, Minn./Le Sueur-Henderson HS) three-pointer in the final minute-and-a-half gave the Auggies a 55-50 lead. A 4-for-4 free-throw performance, a pair each for Schmidt and Seidlitz, in the final 14 seconds sealed the 59-50 victory for Augsburg.

For the game, Augsburg shot 44.7 percent (21-of-47) from the field, while the Roylas were able to convert on 40.4 percent (21-of-52) of their shot attempts. Augsburg claimed a 33-30 advantage on the boards, held a 10-point advantage in points in the paint (34-24) and was able to convert 14-of-17 from the free throw line, while Bethel only hit 3-of-10 from the charity stripe.

Augsburg and Bethel both return to action on Wednesday (12/5) at 7:30 p.m., with the Auggies hosting rival Hamline University at Si Melby Hall, while the Royals travel to St. Peter to take on Gustavus Adolphus College.
