Dan Kornbaum (JR, Little Falls, Minn./Little Falls HS) and
Brett Rasmussen (FY, Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville North HS) both posted double-doubles to lead the Augsburg College men's basketball team to a hard fought, 68-62 victory over Hamline University in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action on Wednesday night at Si Melby Hall. With the win, the Auggies move to 7-0 overall (4-0 MIAC), while Pipers fall to 4-3 overall (2-2 MIAC).
Kornbaum posted a 21-point, 17-rebound effort on the night, recording his third double-double in his last four games. He also added four blocked shots, a pair of assists and a steal to his stat line. Rasmussen posted the first double-double of his collegiate career, finishing with 11 points and 12 boards, while adding three assists. After being held scoreless in the first-half,
Tyler Schmidt (SR, Le Sueur, Minn./Le Sueur-Henderson HS) scored 13 points in the second half and added three rebounds, while
Andy Seidlitz (JR, New Hope, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS) finished with 10 points and five boards.
Hamline was led by Dior Ford (SO, Tucson, Ariz./Sahuaro HS), who finished the night with 16 points and eight rebounds.
The first-half was close the entire way, with neither team able to extend their lead to more than four points. A Kornbaum layup with eight seconds left gave the Auggies a 29-28 lead as they headed into the locker room for halftime.
Back-to-back three-pointers by
Eren Cur (SR, Plymouth, Minn./Wayzata HS) around the 10-minute mark of the second-half, gave Augsburg its first double-digit lead of the night, a 48-37 advantage. A scrappy Hamline team chipped away the Augsburg lead to 64-62 with just under a minute to play. The Auggies were able to get through the Hamline press and
Parker Hines (JR, Lakeville, Minn./Minnehaha Academy HS) laid the ball up for Kornbaum who slammed it home. Kornbaum converted 2-for-2 from the free-throw line on the Auggies next possession to close out the scoring and seal the 68-62 victory for the Auggies.
For the game, Augsburg shot 40.9 percent (27-of-66) from the field, while the Pipers were converted on 40.3 percent (25-of-62) of their shot attempts. Augsburg claimed a huge advantage on the boards, outrebounding Hamline by a 53-30 margin and claimed a 27-8 advantage in second chance points.
Augsburg is idle until after finals week, when it hosts Pacific Lutheran University (Wash.) in a nonconference contest on Friday, Dec. 21 at Si Melby Hall. The Pipers will return to action on Saturday, Dec. 29, when they travel to Washington to take on Whitman College.
