Auggies claim 3-3 draw at Northland

BOXSCORE ASHLAND, Wis. -- Ben McClellan (SO, Cottage Grove, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall HS) continued his impressive scoring weekend with a two-goal effort on Saturday night, scoring two goals for the Augsburg College men's hockey team in a 3-3, overtime tie with Northland College in nonconference action at the Bay Area Civic Center.

McClellan had a seven-point nonconference weekend, scoring four goals with three assists. He had a five-point (two goals, three assists) effort on Friday night in Augsburg's 8-2 win at Wisconsin-Superior.

Augsburg (3-7-1 overall) held a 3-1 lead early in the third period, but Northland (2-7-1 overall) scored twice in the final 4:28 of regulation to force overtime. Augsburg outshot Northland by a 45-38 margin, including a 5-3 advantage in the five minutes of overtime.

McClellan opened the scoring with a goal from Thomas Paine (SO, Superior, Wis./Duluth Marshall HS) at the 14:24 mark of the first period, but Northland tied the game with a goal from Brandon Fehd, assisted by Mike Mikulan and Matt Lennon, at the 18:55 mark of the opening frame.

Augsburg scored twice in the opening 2:23 of the third period. Tim Serratore (JR, Colorado Springs, Colo./Pine Springs HS) scored from Andrew Allen (FY, Arvada, Colo./Ralston Valley HS) and Jon Barrick (JR, Litchfield, Minn.) 52 seconds into the third period, with McClellan scoring from Lucas Hendrickson (FY, Savage, Minn./Burnsville HS) and Zach Dick (SO, Grand Rapids, Minn.) 91 seconds later.

But Northland tied the game with two goals in a 2:37 span late in the game. MIke Lennon scored from Louis Labbe and Kraig Wright at the 15:32 mark, and Mikulan scored from Fehd and Nathan Brown at the 18:09 mark.

Justin Lochner (SR, Sauk Rapids, Minn./Sauk Rapids-Rice HS) had 35 saves in goal for Augsburg, while Mason Riley had 42 saves in goal for Northland.

Augsburg has its last game before the holiday break on Thursday (12/13) at 7:05 p.m., with a game at Wisconsin-River Falls.
