BOXSCORE MINNEAPOLIS --
Andy Grzesiak-Grimm (SR, Wyoming, Minn./St. Francis HS) posted his 12th double-double of the season, but it wasn't enough as the Augsburg College men's basketball team fell to St. Olaf College 66-54 in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action on Monday night at Si Melby Hall.
Augsburg (15-9 overall, 12-7 MIAC) was led by Grzesiak-Grimm's 13-point, 14-rebound, five-assist effort. With his performance Grzesiak-Grimm moved into an elite group of Augsburg athletes. He becomes one of only four players in school history to score more than 1,000 career points and pull down at least 700 career rebounds. Grzesiak-Grimm currently sits 12th all-time in career scoring with 1,128 points and is ranked sixth all-time with 704 career rebounds.
Tyler Schmidt (JR, Le Sueur, Minn./Le Sueur-Henderson HS) led the Auggies in scoring on the night, recording 19 points while adding three rebounds and a pair of assists. Schmidt finished 5-of-9 from beyond the arc and stretched his streak of consecutive games with at least one three-pointer to 33.
St. Olaf (15-9 overall, 14-5 MIAC) finished with four players in double figures, led by Bobby Fong (SR, Bloomington, Minn./Kennedy HS), who finished with a game-high 21 points, while adding seven rebounds on a 9-of-16 shooting night.
The Auggies started the game on an 18-8 run, sparked by a dunk and fast-break layup by
Anthony Humphrey (SR, Minneapolis, Minn./DeLaSalle HS) in the opening minutes of action. Augsburg stretched its lead to 11 on a layup by
Brett Sorenson (SR, Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville South HS) at the 11:13 mark, but St. Olaf countered with a 12-0 run to take their first lead of the evening. The two teams traded baskets for the final three minutes of the half and Augsburg took a 30-29 lead into the locker room at the intermission.
The Ole shooters zoned in during the second half, shooting more than 55 percent from the field. St. Olaf took over the lead and stretched it to as many as 12 before the Auggies could cut it back down to single digits.
Noah Veach (SO, Grand Haven, Mich./Grand Haven HS) converted on an "and-one" play from
Eren Cur (JR, Plymouth, Minn./Wayzata HS) with just over a minute to play to cut the lead to 63-54, but that was as close as the Auggies could get as St. Olaf hung on for the win.
For the game, Augsburg shot 33.3 percent (21-of-63) from the floor, while St. Olaf was able to connect on 50.0 percent (28-of-56) of its shots. The Oles claimed a 40-33 advantage on the boards and were able to post a 32-20 advantage in points in the paint.
Both Augsburg and St. Olaf have clinched spots in the MIAC postseason playoffs and each have one regular season game remaining. The Auggies will travel to Northfield on Wednesday (2/13) to take on Carleton College, while the Oles will host Carleton College on Saturday (2/18) in the cross-town rivalry.
