BOXSCORE MINNEAPOLIS -- In spite of back-to-back three-pointers by Augsburg College's
Tyler Schmidt (JR, Le Sueur, Minn./Le Sueur-Henderson HS) and
Andy Seidlitz (SO, New Hope, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS) in the final 1:08 of action, Saint John's University was able to hit a buzzer-beater to claim the 47-45 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference playoff quarterfinal victory on Wednesday evening at Si Melby Hall.
The MIAC playoff game -- pitting the No. 4 Auggies against the No. 5 Johnnies -- was everything postseason basketball is about. With a 21-21 tie at the half and both teams having nearly identical stat lines, the atmosphere was set up for an exciting second half of basketball.
The Johnnies held a slight lead for the majority of the second half, but Augsburg put together a late rally. scoring on its final four possessions to tie the game at 45-45 with just 25 seconds remaining. St. John's set up for the final play, and Andy Burns drove in and converted on a layup just as the buzzer sounded to seal the win.
Augsburg was led by Schmidt and Seidlitz, who finished with 14 and 11 points, respectively. Schmidt was a perfect 4-for-4 from beyond the three-point arc, while adding a pair of rebounds and steals. Seidlitz finished 3-for-5 from beyond the three-point arc and added a team-high four assists.
The Johnnies were led by the duo of Andy Burns and Aaron Barmore. In addition to hitting the game-winner, Burns finished with 14 points and a game-high six assists, while Barmore claimed the only double-double of the night, finishing with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
For the game, Augsburg shot 33.3 percent (14-of-42) from the field, while St. John's connected on 34.0 percent (18-of-53) of its shots. The Johnnies claimed a narrow 34-33 advantage on the boards and was able to outscore Augsburg 17-2 in bench points. Despite a tough night from the field, Auggie sharpshooters Schmidt and Seidlitz keyed in from beyond the arc. The Augsburg duo connected on 7-of-9 from downtown and as a team, the Auggies shot a season-high 58.3 percent from beyond the arc.
Augsburg ends its season with a 16-10 overall record (13-7 MIAC), while St. John's moves to 16-10 overall (11-9 MIAC) and advances to the MIAC playoff semifinals at Gustavus Adolphus College on Friday night in St. Peter, Minn.
