Andy Grzesiak-Grimm (SR, Wyoming, Minn./St. Francis HS) posted his fifth 20-point effort of the season to lead the Auggies in a 75-72 loss to the University of St. Thomas in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action on Saturday afternoon at Si Melby Hall. With the loss, Augsburg falls to 13-8 overall (10-6 MIAC), while the Tommies move to 15-6 overall (12-4 MIAC).
After trailing 43-29 at the half, Augburg put together an impressive second-half and just missed out on completing the come-from-behind win. The Auggies trailed 61-46 with 11:18 to play in the second-half and proceeded to go on a 14-4 run to cut the St. Thomas lead to 65-60 with 6:56 remaining in the game. The Tommies stretched their lead back to 73-64 with 3:15 to play but Augsburg scored the next eight points consecutively to cut the lead to 73-72 with 39 seconds to play. Augsburg was forced to foul and St. Thomas hit 2-of-2 to go back up 75-72. The Auggies had a chance to tie it up with three seconds left but wasn't able to convert.
Augsburg finished with four players in double-figures led by Grzesiak-Grimm's 20-point, eight-rebound, eight-assist effort.
Andy Seidlitz (SO, New Hope, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS) posted his fourth-consecutive game in double figures, finishing with 15 points and six rebounds.
Tyler Schmidt (JR, Le Sueur, Minn./Le Sueur-Henderson HS) scored 12 points and
Noah Veach (SO, Grand Haven, Mich./Grand Haven HS) finished with 10 points, including a perfect 6-for-6 from the free-throw line.
St. Thomas finished with two players in double-figures, led by Noah Kaiser, who finished with 24 points and a game-high three steals.
For the game, Augsburg shot 51.0 percent (25-of-49) from the floor, while St. Thomas converted on 44.1 percent (26-of-59) of its shots. The teams posted an identical 31 rebounds but the big difference in the game came down to second chance points and points off turnvoers. The Tommies outscored the Auggies 21-13 in points off turnovers and 18-6 in second chance points.
Augsburg returns to action on Wednesday (2/8) when it travels accross the river to take on Macalester College in MIAC action. Tip off is schedule for 7:30 p.m.
