Veach leads Auggie second-half rally

BOXSCORE ST. PAUL, Minn. -- Noah Veach (SO, Grand Haven, Mich./Grand Haven HS) scored a career-high 19 points to lead the Augsburg College men's basketball team to a 58-56 victory over Macalester College in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action on Wednesday night at the Lenord Center. With the win, Augsburg moves to 14-8 overall (11-6 MIAC), while Macalester falls to 1-21 overall (1-16 MIAC). The Auggies currently sit in fourth-place in the MIAC standings and are just one game out of third with three regular season games remaining.

Veach scored 15 of his 19 points in the second-half to spur the Auggie comeback. After trailing by five, 24-19 at the intermission, the Auggies more than doubled their shooting percentage in the second-half. The Auggies came back from a 13-point deficit and slowly chipped away at the Macalester lead.

A old-fashioned three-point play by Eren Cur (JR, Plymouth, Minn./Wayzata HS) at the 6:40 mark brought the Auggies within one and the score to 49-48 in favor of the Scots. Augsburg retook the lead on their next trip down the court off a layup by Andy Grzesiak-Grimm (SR, Wyoming, Minn./St. Francis HS). Both teams traded baskets for their next few trips down the court but another old-fashioned three-point play by Veach allowed the Auggies to go up 57-56 with just 40 seconds remaining. Augsburg's Andy Seidlitz (SO, New Hope, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS) connected on 1-of-2 from the free-throw line to give Augsburg a 58-56 lead with just 20 seconds remaining. Macalester was not able to make their last three-point attempt fall as Augsburg completed the second-half comeback.

Augsburg was led by Veach's 19-point, 6-rebound performance. Also finishing in double-figures for the Auggies was Grzesiak-Grimm who posted is second double-double in his last three games with a 14-point, 11-rebound effort. Tyler Schmidt also continued his three-point streak in the win over the Scots, although he connected on just one three-pointer, this marks his 31st consecutive game with at least one three-pointer made.

Macalester was led by Pierce Peters, who finished with a game-high 28 points, three blocked shots and three steals.

For the game, Augsburg shot 37.3 percent (19-of-51) from the field, while Macalester hit 38.5 percent (20-of-52) of its shots. The Auggies held a 37-30 advantage on the boards and were able to convert on 19-of-26 from the free-throw line, while Macalester only capitalized on 9-of-16.

Augsburg and Macalester both return to action on Saturday (2/11) with Augsburg hosting St. Mary's University and Macalester traveling to St. Peter, Minn. to take on Gustavus Adolphus College.
